Kirk Ferentz had no problem calling Marshall Koehn’s number when the game was on the line.

More times than not, the Iowa kicker delivered.

But maybe Ferentz should’ve lined him up out wide and seen what he could’ve done at receiver. Why? Well, Koehn already turned some serious heads in Indianapolis.

According to Sports Illustrated’s Chris Burke, Koehn’s 40-yard dash time of 4.61 is the fastest by a kicker in at least a decade. No kicker or offensive lineman came within 0.13 seconds of Koehn’s blistering 40.

That would be slow for a WR. He should concentrate on his mid-range game.

haha that's what i was thinking. Who wants a 4.6 WR? Next is, how's that speed help a kicker?

He told my kid he had a bad start. Looked fine to me, lol, but he has run a 4.5-40 (hand-timed) at the UI Indoor facility. Marshall owns many of the UI specialist records for speed and agility.

Speed for a kicker is important as usually they are the last line of defense (and most have no idea how to get an angle, let alone tackle).

Keep in mind he also played Soccer (32 goals in a season), Baseball, throughout HS (wrestled his Fr year). He is in the state record books for baseball with most hits (201), most doubles (60 with 30 of those in 1 year which puts him at top for single season, this means speed on the bases) most runs scored (214). Played on runner-up soccer team, was a WR\DB\K\P in HS.

Specialist or not, Marshall is a very good athlete!!!

No kidding. He finished 2nd among the entire team last year for their winter competition (based on variety of things including a bunch strength and conditioning tests, as well as schoolwork, as you probably know). One of only two specialists to finish in the top 10 for the entire team.

I am shocked how many times I watched NFL/top notch ncaa programs going for 4th and long....not so much because they were that confident in their offense, but because they had that little confidence in their kicker.

Couldn't help but smile and think....that's an easy 3 for us!

Seeing that people don't think a 4.6 is fast enough for a WR in the pro's I went and looked up Jerry Rice scouting combine time and he was clocked at 4.71. Being a 49er fan, and watching Rice play every chance I could throughout his career, I would say he had a timed speed and game speed because not very many people ran him down. But I wouldn't rule Koehn out of playing WR strictly based on his 4.6 combine time. That being said I don't think he will get a chance to play WR in the pro's, but teams will like his speed kicking off and covering the kicks with that speed.

People also have to remember that the combine uses electronic timing. Most high schools use stopwatches for 40 yard times. So typically you can add at least a tenth of a second or more to any high school 40 yard time for an accurate measurement. How many times have we heard about the 4.4 recruit that comes in and runs a 4.55 or 4.6 in an electronically timed run?

Marvin McNutt only ran a 4.54 at the combine. That means that he would have had less than a 22" lead on Marshall when he finished.
