Kris Murray comes in at #3 on Top 25 Breakout Star Candidates

Kris is a pretty safe pick for breakout star. I think he avg's closer to 16.5ppg and 6.5rpg next year and doesn't take as big of a leap as Keegan but still a star on a solid Iowa team. I think Perkins will be the bigger surprise as he will avg around 15.5ppg and be Iowa's 2nd leading scorer. Iowa's depth is a major concern and something I think that will cause them to fall just short of another tourney appearance. Really feel like Fran needed a solid transfer or two this offseason to round out some depth.

Tamar Bates at #10 is a pretty good guess. Indiana is loaded next year and really could be a top 10 team all year. If Bates hits his potential Indiana is going to be an elite team and National Title contender with all the talent and experience they have. He could be the wingman TJD has been waiting for.

I just looked at Bates stats from last year. I just don't see it.

Honestly, the great thing about Iowa next year is that I could see 4 players having breakout seasons: Murray, PMac, Perkins or Sandfort. That’s a really good nucleus with a lot of potential.

I love Perkins all around game but for him to ever average over 10 points per game his 3 point shot needs to be much more consistent.

Kris is really working on also being a facilitator for that fact that he has a lot of offensive weapons around him. Would not be surprised to see Kris flirting with some triple doubles. He did at DME

From Jon Rothstein, CBS Sports:

Kris Murray, Iowa: The brother of Keegan Murray, Kris Murray is in prime position to be the next elite player in the Hawkeyes’ program. The 6-8 forward averaged 9.7 points and 4.3 rebounds last season, with averages of 15.8 points and 6.6 rebounds in games where he logged 20 minutes or more. Buy stock now.

I hope you're right on Perkins. I just don't see that kind of scoring production. I think that's possible out of Sandfort as he will be taking a lot of threes off assists from the slashing PMac and Kris.

Just like all Nebraska football needed was one off-season to turn close losses and a mediocre record into something elite!

Kris Murray, Iowa: After this season, nobody is going to call this guy “Keegan’s brother”. The 6-8 Murray is in line to become the next great player in Iowa’s program and he’s already provided a quality sample size. In games last season where Murray logged 25 minutes or more, he averaged 15.8 points and 6.6 rebounds. That’s a pretty good estimate of what people should expect out of this guy moving forward in the Big Ten.

I think we will have at least 4 players averaging in double figures, starting with Tony, PMac, Kris, and Payton

I agree that depth could be an issue; sounds like Fran is only comfortable going 9 deep and will use Ogundule & Mulvey only in certain situations

Tony Perkins is mentioned at the end of the article.

Top Men’s College Basketball Player Breakout Candidates for 2022–23

Iowa, Kentucky and Gonzaga are among the teams with someone who looks in line for a notable leap this season.

When the men’s AP All-Americans were announced last spring, two of the first-teamers hadn’t even averaged double-figure scoring the prior season. Massive jumps in production, like the ones we saw from Johnny Davis and Keegan Murray in 2021–22, happen every year—even if they don’t all blossom into All-Americans. With that duo off to the NBA, which players are best positioned to follow their lead and be the breakout stars of the ’22–23 season? Here are 10 names to learn now before they’re household names come March.

Note: For the purposes of this article, a breakout player is defined as a player who averaged less than 10 points per game and is returning to the same team they played for last season.

Kris Murray, Iowa

While it’s not fair or realistic to expect an explosion from Kris that matches what his brother Keegan did last season, it’s clear Kris Murray will be the centerpiece of the Hawkeyes in 2022–23. After seeing only spot minutes as a freshman, Murray blossomed into one of the best sixth men in the sport as a sophomore, averaging nearly 10 points in under 18 minutes per contest. He’s not quite as adept defensively as Keegan was, nor is he as good a shooter off movement. But Kris has every chance to emerge into a first-round pick in his own right this season thanks to his skill level, versatility and fit in Fran McCaffery’s offensive system, which should give him tons of space to operate.
