kylie feurbach is back

I'd agree. Not sure you can start Kylie and McCabe together unless Guyton is struggling..
Well we already do. I understand your point about not having Lucy next year but unless Guyton shows major improvement I see both of those 2 starting next year along w/Deal, Hannah and Heiden. McCabe's defense I thought took a nice step up this year, and possibly ( doubtful) she can add a bit of putting the ball on the floor next year. I understand she's had a lot of time to do it and hasn't so it probably won't happen, but we can wish.

Definitely setting up to be very similar to this current team, with some seniors that keep improving their game, a more seasoned and confident sophomore (to be) class, and a hopeful star given a lot of responsibility.

Feuerbach came into her own this year, and likely has her best basketball in front of her. Maybe she finally finds some consistency in her shot, which is the biggest mystery in her game.

That's probably a maybe for the whole team. Find consistency. They need points from every player that has struggled this year. Replacing the production of Olsen and Affolter is now the question. And Addie Deal.

Curious and more curious if Jensen looks for points in the portal.
Edit--and the Feuerbach decision right now may indicate that the coaches are looking at the portal and needed an answer.

So who will be the best all-around player on the team next year?

Ava maybe if she can stay out of foul trouble?
Not that blocks are a be-all, end-all defensive stat, but Heiden is second on the team with 20 only behind O'Grady's 30.

Per-40 stats have their issues, but somewhat help control for differences in playing time. Heiden averages 3.3 blocks per-40 minutes, while O'Grady averages 2.0. Heiden's blocks per-40 is in the 99th percentile nationally.

Heiden could be the best shot blocker Iowa has had in quite a while.

...and her offense is only going to get better.
She's gotten better at attacking the basket, but still only attempts 2- two-point field goals per game. Her three-point shooting really hasn't improved in her entire college career.

Kate Martin made major strides in her final year so it's not impossible, but expecting major strides in a player's 6th college season would be the exception, not the rule.

Absolutely. Very athletic, and can get off the floor as well. I've not see much film on Hays, but considering she's supposed to be a heck of a volleyball player as well, I'm imagining she's pretty athletic as well.....

Kylie coming back makes a big difference in the portal now. It takes off the pressure to be desperate in the portal by over paying to get someone with elite defensive skills to shutdown the JuJu types. Jan likes defense so I would think she would try somehow to replace this loss. In a sense, we have one less portal person to get into a bidding war over. This is s huge relief already that the coaches don''t have to endure now. Now they can focus on less stressful options if they choose to go that route.

Think this affords us a chance to pick a cheaper backup as an extra scorer that has the possibility to start. Since we don't know who will all end up in the portal yet. If I had to pick a player or player type in the portal now, that would be Kailey Woolston of BYU. She can play multiple spots #2 - #4 and she is a scorer at 3 levels. This would allow for a possible starter and/or backup in the other 2 to 3 positions. Since we have 2 roster spots open, we could buy some insurance at the #2 - #4 spots with her or a player like her.

The reason it could be possible to get Woolston at a discount is if I'm reading the BYU board correctly, she is still on her LDS mission and will be all summer and most of fall yet. This means she will most likely miss some of preseason training. Thus, it could lower the price tag to bring her in. Might be an overly wishful possibility, but she might like our culture piece over a maxed out financial package.

The other insurance spot is a PG. Don't have anyone that I can think of in the portal yet. This PG needs ball handing and passer skills first and be a scorer as a bonus or at least to be a threat to score keeping a defense honest. Again, if the price is right, then adding another piece to make you sleep easier at night to break presses should be looked at as a depth upgrade.

So someone asked an interesting question earlier. As a Morman, can she play on Sundays?

Totally agree with this and yet, I believe it’s a huge recruiting coup. She IS the reason, this defense is elite in my opinion. I think Jan will continue to be a defensive minded coach and I think she will continue to get the girls in there that can play next level defense but when you have a woman at 6 foot that is that athletic that can play defense like that it’s a game changer.

Nobody else currently on the team has that capability, so you truly have to treat it like a priority! IMO, if that’s the way, Jan wants to play.

We’ll have to find the offense elsewhere. Once again, my only real concern is her propensity to get sloppy with the ball sometimes.

Yes indeed. I want to use Heiden in the post, but we need to work on the timing and placement of those passes.
AOG is partially to blame for quite a few of those passes. She generally got good positioning, but she passively waited for the ball to get to her. When the pass is not perfect, you need to "go and get it". Heiden should be better at this given hear athletic ability

Stacey Schlapkohl from Durant was an all state VB player as I recall and that didn't make her a good BB player. I don't think from what I've read, the competition in Alaska is all that good, BB or VB.

Trajan Langdan was ok 🤷‍♂️

The competition that Leyla Hays has faced in high school is almost certainly greater than what Megan Gustafson had to play against in remote northern Wisconsin.

This is very good news. Kylie will be an important piece on next year’s team. Iowa WBB will be relatively young next year, so another senior leader is welcome.

Improved a ton season to season. She's savvy, long-limbed, good rebounder and her 3 point shot became a weapon. A senior/senior. If not a PG can assume/share leadership role.

This is a good.

Drove me crazy. Same criticism regarding rebounding. If she wasn’t perfectly positioned or the missed shot careened off the rim a bit wonky, O’Grady was often out hustled for the board.

This makes her a no-go from my perspective. Need someone in shape and ready to play, and this scenario does not match that criteria. Add to it the time it takes to learn the R&R offense (playing as a team) and you just risk a lot of wasted time getting everyone playing together.

The one big advantage they will bring into next season, is an experienced team that has played together now. No summer filled with injury rehabs without levelling up. They need months together playing team ball.

That doesn't mean no transfers; it does mean those transfers need to be in Iowa City this summer.

*Will be difficult enough getting Deal up to speed.

*Primary need: points and experienced ball handling.

Please don’t sleep on Hays and Houston. I believe both will impress and in the rotational mix for playing time.

There are no point guards in the portal good enough to justify the disruption it would cause. There are no Lucys out there. PG in the portal is academic. Guyton and Deal will get the job done.

Glad Kylie's returning. Big plus for the team

To be fair, the portal doesn’t open until next week unless your coach has left the program.
Personally I think a veteran PG would be an important addition. Not sure Deal and Guyton are up to handling physical teams like Ohio St.

Looks like her mission ends around the beginning of September (18 months from Feb 27 2024).

Yes, BYU just chooses not to. But they can.
Looking up Morman guidelines they call "commandments" It states they should not work or take part in any activities that "take away from the spirit of the Sabbath" which they celebrate on sundays. So I guess it would depend on how religiously structured her upbringing was.

Nor did I say that it did. I SAID she was ALSO a very good volleyball player, so she's probably pretty athletic. We already know she was a top 50ish recruit in basketball.

I agree, but my point was a good VB player doesn't mean the player is very athletic necessarily. Hopefully Hays' success can equal Megan at some point, or even close.

True to a degree. But there were plenty of passes ft over her head and several ft past her. Its also the timing of those passes. I do agree that Heidens being more athletic will help.

I have no clue who that was. I haven't lived in Iowa since 1986. I'm just saying Hays was a high level recruit in basketball, AND supposed to be a very good volleyball player. I can't comment on Stacey, as to her rankings in either sport....

Generally speaking big time volleyball forwards, stressing the “big time” part. Can jump very well. My last is a volleyball player (incidentally Iowas team is awful) and we watch quite a bit of big ten volleyball. They are pretty athletic as a rule

I don't necessarily disagree, but my point was that that isn't always the case. I'm not sure Hays in VB was "big time".
