The problem with Trump is that it is hard to condemn him as being racist or anti-semtic or the like because he doesn't display any of that ideologically... I think that's because almost completely non-ideologically. He's so narcissistic that he doesn't seem to have many well developed thoughts about anything but himself. He's also really incurious.
But since he is so narcissistic he'll associate with any piece of trash that he deems useful to furthering his own agenda.

I agree that narcissim is the predominate controlling trait for DT but he has a history with minorities.
The Trump MGMT Co. was sued by the USDOJ for rental discrimination against blacks in the 70s.
In the 80s, he personally publically campaigned for death to the "Central Park 5" - 5 black teenagers who were accused of murder in the death of a white woman. The CP5 were later conclusively proven through DNA to be innocent yet Trump still maintains that they should have received the death penalty.
"Good people on both sides"..... Jews not loyal enough to him,.... the overtly racist birth certificate campaign against Obama....many more examples.
I wouldn't be surprised if he was racist/bigoted in the stereotypical way of thinking jews = good at accounting, blacks = good at basketball.. etc etc. He's a dumb enough thinker. (although he was also sort of cosmopolitan and progressive in some ways on gays, women in business, etc)
But to your point... something of that nature over 30 or 40 years ago don't do much to sway voter's opinions that he's a racist.

He didn't give the dems much to work with where claims of being a racist were concerned. I remember some Vox article where they tried to lay it out, and they basically fell flat on their face. (at least through his first term)

Don't agree, if he's really racist he's done a good job hiding it. Almost all of his transgressions have been hanging out with the wrong crowd, basically.
The problem there is he's hung out with goons of all stripes -- what they have in common that they kiss his ass or are valuable to him in some way. So it's hard to say that the only reason he's hanging out with them is because he's racist or anti-semitic or whatnot.
Steve Bannon was the same way in a more intellectual way. He openly said he was on a mission and that if support by racist idiots -- he called them something disparagingly -- helped build the groundswell of support needed to get his movement where he wanted it to go, then so be it.
Some people came it .via race, some because they hated democrats. A giant democrat hating apparatus was in place in conservative media.
To be a part of that wasn't necessarily to be racist.

He said the same thing about David Duke in 2016 ......until they rolled the tape of Trump speaking about Duke in an interview years earlier.
Regardless of how it started -- even if racist conspirators -- what it ended up being was Hannity and the like bitching about Obama not producing a birth certificate. That's the problem. I'm sure millions of republicans saw it that way and were drawn in on that basis. There is no apparent racism there, so you're going to look a bit nuts to them in trying to argue the reason they care is racism. Go at it from a racism angle and you've got a weak line of argumentation for reasons just stated. I see it as a poor strategic argument from the dems.
This event was like any other stupid democrat hate session pushed by Hannity and the like -- they've been eating it all up for a long time now.
