I love Larry David and I like Bill Maher.

But this whole thing is such a Hollywood bubble self fellating drama.

Bill Maher: I had dinner with Trump.
Answer: Who gives a shit? Good for you.

Larry: He had dinner with Trump!
Answer: Who gives a shit what he does?

NYT: Here's what Larry David thinks about Bill Maher having Dinner with Trump.
Answer: Why is this news/ an important opinion?

A bunch of self important jagoffs.

I prefer the roasting of Maher by Bill Burr. Jesus how pretentious are you. Look at all those big words. You’re well read :).

Like it or not, they matter. Harris got hammered by a large segment of the voting public for refusing to do that jagoff Rogan. With that much influence, they deserve the scrutiny.

I know they do. And so do TikTok influencers. And video game YouTubers...who all focus on shit that really doesn't matter and propping themselves and their views on unimportant shit up to make it matter.

Don’t trust what the person that was there actually says. But trust the opinion of somebody that wasn’t.

Makes sense.

Well, it affected the election so...it does matter. Sadly.

Nice thing about long podcasts the candidate has to talk and think and talk some more.

It’s not scripted and edited like a 15 minute 60 minutes puff piece.

I listen to about 6 Rogan podcasts a year. I don’t find his guest very interesting to me most of the time. Hunting and comedians I never listen to. I also tired of the conspiracy nuts, aliens, and ex CIA OP’s with an agenda.

Both made their points. Bill replaced his "new rules" segment to make his point, and Larry followed up on that. I appreciate both POV's.

Somewhere, Bill Maher doesn’t get it.
Of course Bill gets that. He was defensive when he talked about the meeting initially, being sure to highlight his criticisms offered to Trump. He basically sold the meeting as an information gathering operation.

Thinking about such a meeting, I suppose I'd only go for A) the chance to persuade or B) information gathering.

However, if you believe the man is a danger and has power, there's also the angle of whether or not this meeting would tend to boost or diminish the man's power. (ultimately I'm not sure the meeting really mattered)

Which would be our big concern here.

Bill has been on a big talk-to-everybody kick, and this was the ultimate example.

Which is fine... as long as you don't go too far in normalizing bullshit.

The moral disgust angle? I think that's less important, ultimately. (How do you think about people interview serial killers, for example)

Are you talking about Maher's story? I absolutely believe him. That isn't the point. The visit served absolutely no purpose other than getting Maher attention (which is all he wanted) and painting Trump as a "normal guy". He LAUGHS!!! No one doubts Trump can ape normal behavior when it serves his purpose. He's a psychopath...that's what they do. It has absolutely zero impact on his behavior because he's incapable of feeling empathy or remorse. For Trump, it's part of a game and Maher is being criticized for playing the game.

1. Superficial Charm & Charisma

Psychopaths can be very charming, charismatic, and persuasive people. This can be especially so with female psychopaths, who are more social and emotional than their male counterparts. While they lack true empathy, they are often very skilled at “faking” prosocial behaviors like flattery, kindness, and false sympathy. They may use these skills to get what they want from people, but eventually, they are unable to keep up with the act. Over time, the charm and charisma will probably wear off, unmasking an underlying coldness or cruelty.

As I said in another thread, it's like accepting a dinner invitation from your neighbor who you know is a serial killer just so you can come home and tell your family what a nice guy he is.

What I’m surprised by Maher is his apparent belief that the Trump he spoke to was the “real” Trump; even tho it contradicts about every other account we’ve ever head about the man.

Whether or not Trump is aping the behavior isn't relevant. I'm sure Hitler enjoyed a cold beer on a hot summer day just as much as the rest of us. You're going to find human in everyone.

(to give Bill credit -- he did address this point... that we care about Trump as a public figure because of his politics)

Wouldn't you tend to believe your own actual physical interaction, over any third party account?...

So you'd enjoy a cold beer on a hot summer with your serial killer neighbor and just shoot the shit? While your family peeked through the blinds in fear? Great! He likes a cold beer on a hot summer day, too. Quite a revelation. He's still an unrepentant serial killer.

Maher's visit demonstrated nothing. As I said, it served no purpose other than notoriety for Maher and propaganda for Trump. We SHOULD care more - FAR more - about Trump the public figure because that's who WE have to deal with. Maher should have countered with an unedited hour on his show where nothing was off limits. Hell, make it a live event. A private dinner was flatly stupid.

No, not in a genuine way. I suppose I could see aping a jovial interaction to extract information.

I didn't make clear the point you responded to in that post though, apparently. I was saying exactly what you were -- Trump the political figure is what matters, not that he enjoys the cold beer. (that was my gripe with Maher while listening to him recall the meeting -- although to his credit he did acknowledge this point towards the end of his report)

So even if Trump was genuine and not a sociopath turning on the charm, it wouldn't matter.

My issue is how can you call yourself a comedian and want to be part of the political social club. If you have them on a show and aren’t ****ing with them you aren’t doing your job.
Bruce, Carlin, Pryor all of these comedians idols would slap the shit out of these podcasters calling themselves comedians.

Any individual third party account? Of course my own interaction would carry more weight.

But Trump is a very unique case having been covered exhaustively over the past decade in particular, The Apprentice and before that when he was still well known in NYC. The biggest conclusion I’ve drawn is that Trump might be the consummate performer, and he always changes to what he thinks his audience wants to hear and see.
