With the series being split 10-10 over the past 20.....how many of those games was Iowa favored going into the game?

My guess was at least 15, but thought someone over here might have already looked it up.

Iowa has been favored in the last 15 games.

last 20 game: 10-10
last 10 games: 5-5
last 6 games: 3-3

Now, ISU fans will tell you how they have been dominating the series recently and Iowa fans will agree. I think this says all you need to know about expectations and how the programs are perceived. To ISU fans .500 is a success story; At Iowa it is failure.

After living through Iowa's streak of 15 in a row from 1983 top 1998......most Iowa St fans would call the recent history a success for them. Dominating? Any realistic Cyclone fan won't agree to that as they haven't dominated anyone in football.....ever.

I'm going to do some research, but it seems like when Iowa St. wins it is generally on a last second field goal or by a very small margin.

Iowa wins some close ones, but generally when the Hawks win they do so in dominating fashion.

Total Points over the last 10 years:

Iowa 221 (22 ppg)
Iowa State 209 (21 ppg)

Series Record:
Last 6 games: 3-3
Last 10 games: 5-5
Last 20 games: 10-10

Now that is what I call a rivalry!

I did some score research of recent games.

In the last three Cyclone wins, they have won each game by exactly three points.
In the last three Hawk wins, they have won by 6 points, 28, and 32 points.

Read the thread "Analysis of the CyHawk game under Ferentz". It's some pretty cool data.

The dominating stat in that was when Iowa goes 8 wins or more in the season they are 6-2 against Iowa St. When they win 7 or less games in the season they are 1-6 against Iowa St.

Another interesting stat is Iowa is 2-7 in games decided by 7 points or less.

Ask and you shall receive

Since 1984

Iowa - 21 wins, average score of 35-13 (biggest outlier, 1985, with a 57-3 victory)
Iowa State - 10 wins, average score of 23-16 (biggest outlier, 2005, with 23-3 victory)

Number of times Iowa wins a game by touchdown or less = 4/21
Number of times Iowa State wins a game by touchdown or less = 7/10

If we want to say since 2004 is recent history

Iowa - 6 wins, average score of 26-10
Iowa State - 5 wins, average score of 22-16

Number of times Iowa wins a game by touchdown or less = 2/6
Number of times Iowa State wins a game by touchdown or less = 4/5 (with wins of 2, 3, 3, 3, 20)

need to buck the trend and just start winning again. The iowa state teams now arent as bad as the 80s but they should be beaten more times than not

KF has only won 8+ games 7 years at Iowa---02,03,04,08,09,10,13 Iowa is 6-1 vs ISU in those years, with that loss being in 02

Iowa would be 1-8 against ISU when they have 7 or fewer wins. 99,00,01,05,07,11,12,14 winning in 06

What does it matter how much you win by? Just win baby
Iowa tends to play tighter and makes more mistakes or does less in tight games.

Iowa is 4-7 in games they've scored under 30 pts in the series since 1999. Of course they're only 3-2 when they score more than 30. More telling, though, is that they're 2-7 when scoring less than 20 pts.

24 seems to be the key number for the Hawks. If Iowa can top that mark, victory is almost assured....unless we end with a redux of 2011.
If we struggle to score....nerve-wracking ensues.
I still don't trust our defense enough against ISU so we're gonna need to find the end zone at least 3 times if we want to win.
And hopefully it doesn't come down to needing to stop ISU from either a game - tying or game-winning drive because if it does then we're f***ed.

How bout this one:

Last 4 ISU wins in this series....were by a total of 11 points.

Iowa hasn't been able to win the close games at all lately.
