What is it with Goofers and sex videos?

Why didn't the Title IX office suspend Nate Mason (1st Team All B1G) and Dupree McBrayers (a key player off the bench), similar to what they did to the Goofer football players?

From the St Paul, MN Pioneer Press:

Nate Mason and Dupree McBrayer were suspended at the end of a miserable season last year for their connection to a sex video that briefly was posted on social media. They missed the final four games of the season and found themselves to be, at best, the butt of jokes and, at worst, an example of a program that had gone astray in Richard Pitino’s third season as coach.

Kevin Dorsey, who was shown with a woman in the video, decided to transfer to Colorado State to get away from the scrutiny and the embarrassment.

Mason and McBrayer were not seen in the portion of the video that was inadvertently posted on Dorsey’s social media, but they were implicated when Pitino chose to suspend all three after the incident.

Mason and McBrayer stayed put and both have been integral parts of a team that has enjoyed one of the biggest single-season turnarounds in the country this season. After winning just eight games last season, including two in the Big Ten, the Golden Gophers went 23-8 and 11-7 in the conference to earn a double-bye in this week’s conference tournament.

Mason was named first team All-Big Ten, Pitino won coach of the year honors and McBrayer has been a vital sixth man. Mason leads the team in scoring and assists and McBrayer is fourth on the team in scoring and minutes played in what has been a season of redemption for a program that cratered last year.

“We’ve been through a lot,” Mason said, chuckling as he reflected on the adversity of the past year.

And when they get out on campus these days?

“Heads held high,” McBrayer said with a smile. “Everybody’s saying good game. Last year we didn’t get none of that. People sticking around after the game. It’s cool to have a lot of love on campus and from little kids. I really appreciate that.”

It's not a unique situation to the Goofs, and I'm all for second chances, but if this had happened to any other student... they'd likely have been expelled.

Maybe it's part of the reason some student/athletes feel entitled.

It sounds all too familiar to those 10 Goofer football players.

From reading the Gopher forums... this attitude is permeated with the fan base as well, The importance of "W"s is higher on the totem pole than ethics and standards in Dinkytown.

Lil Ricki goes from nearly getting fired last year to COY candidate this season. Given the blood lines... his approach wasn't a surprise.

Did the video suggest s crime was committed?

I don't know. Did the young woman sign a release allowing the video to be posted? Did she even know she was being filmed? Seems as though this type of behavior is becoming the norm for Gopher athletes. Maybe I'm old fashioned, but if it were our players, I would have a hard time rooting for them.

was it consensual? If so, it is nothing alike and some of you need to lighten up....

From ESPN.com:

March 1, 2016

Nate Mason Sr., Mason's father, said his son and his two teammates were suspended for the remainder of the season after Dorsey posted a video to his Twitter account Friday that showed the players engaging in sexual activity with women. The Twitter account has since been deleted.

Nate Mason Sr. said Pitino called him before the three players' initial suspension for Sunday's game.

"They were all together [during the incident]," Mason Sr. said. "[Mason] didn't know his friend would put it on social media."

Nate Mason Sr. said he often warned his son, the team's leading scorer at 13.8 points per game, about the dangers of social media.

"Why would you let someone film you with their phone?" Mason Sr. said.

Mason Sr. said his son never got into trouble in high school and arrived at Minnesota with a "clean reputation." He said he hopes his son understands the gravity of his errors.

"I think kids need to learn when they make mistakes," he said.

In all, four players will miss Minnesota's final games because of suspensions or previous dismissals. Carlos Morris was dismissed earlier this month for "conduct detrimental to the team."

Last season, Zach Lofton was dismissed for failing to "meet the expectations and obligations of the team," and Daquein McNeil was kicked off the team after he was charged with domestic assault.

actually, it was women

Also, I would think this would be a violation of Student Conduct Policy....

Sounds like the players were victims as well. They should sue the University. They won't but they should.

Also center Reggie Lynch accused of sexual assault in the offseason
Accused is the key word. No charges and no discipline from the Title XI board.

The sex tape was unfortunate, but it was a consensual sex act. Kevin Dorsey, whose twitter the video was posted on, said that his phone was stolen at MOA and whoever did it must have posted the video. There was an investigation, but Dorsey transferred before anything came of it.

It lends to understanding what the character of the players collectively are. I know, kids are kids and all that.

Do you really want to have players on your team that would do this sort of thing? How well can you hold your nose?

Yeah...maybe I am old fashioned too. I'm not naive enough to believe this sort of thing can and has happened (the act, not the posting on social media) at Iowa post PP and kids make kid mistakes, but still.

It's Pitino's business...and our business to file it away making our own conclusions about Pitino and how he runs the program.
