It’s not a stretch to say the helmet status was irrelevant. People die on a motorcycle all the time while wearing a helmet.

Wearing a helmet is not a measure of intelligence, granted. However, to jump on a motorcycle does take a degree of idiocy!
For context, Trad also thinks that smoking doesn't cause lung cancer.
A guy we used to know from RAGBRAI years ago (think he was one of the bus drivers for one team) was a motorcycle rider and never wore a helmet.
He went out and raced with one of his buddies w/o a helmet and after he was far ahead of him (at night), he stopped to wait for him. The other guy came up on him not realizing he was fully stopped and just "bumped" him a bit. Just enough to knocked him over off the bike. Landed on his head and he became an instant organ donor.
Basically a 5 mph "bumper" crash, w/o helmet.
