Libertarian Party member Jake Porter on Saturday will announce his candidacy for Iowa governor in the 2018 election.

Porter will make the announcement at 4 p.m. at the North Liberty Community Library, 520 W. Cherry St., according to a news release issued Monday.

He has spent years advocating for medical freedom, civil liberties and corporate subsidy reform, the release said, and was a candidate for Iowa secretary of state in 2010 and 2014.

"The state is making our lives harder — raising taxes on the poorest Iowans, while giving away millions to huge corporations," Porter said in the release. "I'm ready to get to work on protecting civil liberties, making things easier for small business and improving all Iowans' quality of life."

Porter has served on the Libertarian National Committee, worked as Iowa coordinator for congressman Bob Barr's presidential campaign leading up to the 2008 presidential election and worked as interim Iowa coordinator for former Gov. Gary Johnson's presidential campaign in the 2012 election, the release said.

Porter is a tech and media entrepreneur in Council Bluffs who received a business degree from AIB College of Business in Des Moines, the release said, and has worked for Yahoo! and Apple.

Good, I voted for Lee Hieb in 2014, Porter will most likely get my vote in 2018.

I wonder why he is announcing in North Liberty. Seems odd when he appears to be from Council Bluffs.
