Up here driving around Canada for the first time (Sarnia, Ont. today), didn't realize how low the speed limits are. The equivalent of the Interstate is 100 kph. Primary roads are 70 or 80, secondary roads 50.
The locals don't observe them, of course, but they don't fudge more than we do in the US of A. Also, saw billboards warning that exceeding the speed limit by 50 kph -- the equivalent of going 90 mph on the Interstate -- will result in a $10,000 fine and seizure of the vehicle on the spot. So I'm not going to drive 90.
In my brief experience so far, it appears that to keep up with traffic, one must exceed the posted limit by roughly 10 percent, which isn't much. When I'm on roads with an 80 kph limit, driving 55 mph seems to put me in the stream.
Nice country, by the way. They like their beer up here. I like their beer up here, too. A plate of poutine and a local craft brew make a fine combination. Not sure of the Weight Watcher points.
