Thought he played pretty well. Got beat a couple times, but its his first full game. Significant upside.

Kicks Welsh to guard, where he is best. I'd be happy with Jackson, Wirfs at tackle, Daniels at center, Welsh at guard. Other guard can stay Render, and if Boone can get his snaps so be it.

Realistically, guys will get nicked, so we will need Boone and Reynolds anyway. But I'm happy with this starting line up.

Looked like he started. I never saw him get beat, but I only watched him part time. I can definitely see Wirfs and Jackson at tackle for the next 3 years.

Yes he started, I watched him about 1/2 the time, he looked pretty good for a true freshman. I would like to see how he does against someone other than Illinois.

Simplified the running schemes for him. Smart move. We shall see if it marks a bit of a change in identity... More shotgun and running out of the ' read ' option. Less zone blocking and wondering who to block.

I like the counter plays with hat on hat; I think teams have widely figured out how to shoot the gaps on zone plays.
A good mix would be nice from here on out and 100% confidence BF will get what he wants out of the run game. Hopefully sooner than later.

I did not watch the line play as I was watching Stanley, very good pocket awareness, his size allows him to break arm tackles that was a problem for CJ, each game he seems to make better and smarter decisions.

now he needs to cut down on the dry spells as he went 4-18 in one stretch.

Pretty amazing to be starting in a B1G game when he was playing in high school just last year. He had a few bad plays, but his athleticism and natural ability are off the charts. Really good future at tackle with both he and Alaric Jackson is off the chart. From what I saw yesterday, he did a very good job in pass blocking, other than a time or two he was confused on who to block. But that is to be expected.

I truly thought we would see this line-up for the OLine, but didn't expect to see it until after the bye week. It was hopefully beneficial for Boone to sit out and get another couple of weeks of rehab on that ankle. Getting him in at LG at full strength will help even more.

Now ... we need to get a pass rush from our DLine.

in a thread about line play, your first comment is that you didn't watch the line play??

do you try to hijack every single thread you post in? sheesh

Best part was welsh moving to G. When we move him out it b/c we lost Ike it made us worse at 2 positions. He’s an outstanding G

The DE he was against was the BTN player to watch on defense. He just came back and had a good day in limited action the week before. The only time I saw him beat Wirfs he went to his inside, where it looked like Wirfs expected help. It did look like if there were twists or stunts, Wirfs would try to stay locked into his guy instead of switching. But having the experience of Welsh next to him will help that a ton too.

Also noticed when they had Boyle in at QB, Wirfs switched to LT and they put LeGrand in at RT. Suppose that means if AJax went down, they'd slide Wirfs to LT and move Welsh back out? That'd be a huge spot for such a young kid.

Good time to start him, since he was likely playing against other freshmen most of the game.

Interesting. So Myer at LG and go with Wirfs at LT. Might be the right formula.

I don't watch the OL as the lack of flags for false starts, holding is a sign they are doing their job, missed blocks and limiting sacks will be corrected as they get older.
RSFR LT Jackson is doing a very good job but most don't notice it nor do they talk about it. if the coaches thought that Wirfs was ready great, but lets see how he does against OSU and Wisconsin before getting carried away.

Stanley has been sacked 9 times thru 6 games with 3 of them coming in the Wyoming game, that makes 6 sacks in 5 games. it is these things that I look for. Stanley is settling in and is getting others involved with 4 WR's, 3 TE's, 3 RB's, 1 FB getting catches.

if a QB is comfortable in the pocket then the OL is doing their job.

Same thing I see, especially when they have the numbers advantage.

You need to mix it up or else defenses get used to the timing etc.

Defensive players are starting to anticipate Wadley cutting. Might be able to mix that up what a head fake and keep on burning pretty soon. He almost broke that one quick hitter.

If that is how you form your analysis of OL play then you may want to limit your comments and analysis on the OL.

what better way is there? last season CJ was constantly being sacked and who got blamed? the OL. this season as I pointed out Stanley has been sacked 9 times with 3 coming in the 1st game. lack of sacks credit goes to the OL. last season how many drives stalled because of Penalties that was on the OL. this year don't recall that many drives stalling because of penalties, the credit goes to the OL,

the best way to judge the OL is not seeing anything by way of penalties, THERE are 5 players on the OL not just 1, RSFR Jackson is playing very well and yet nobodies said a word about him, but they sure do rave about Wirfs. for God only knows why.

So if they on count, don't hold and average 2 ypc and give up 4 sacks a game that's great according to your criteria? More evidence of the need to limit your comments and analysis.

are you that dense, the OL is doing their job Wadley avg'd 5 ypc, Stanley was only sacked once, that's doing great. only you would try to make fake stats and try to say something I didn't.
lets look at the OL now
LT RSFR 6'7 320 lb Jackson
LG JR 6'4 305 lb Render
C JR 6'4 295 lb Daniels
RG RSSR 6'3 285 lb Welsh
RT FR 6'5 315 lb Wirfs.
the niddle of the OL now was the middle of the OL that was awarded the Joe Moore Award for the best OL, LT Myer and RT Boettger have been hurt and have been replaced by a FR and a RSFR.

And you think they were truly worthy of that award? No chance it went to a squad to who the recipients coach who has repeatedly called Moore a mentor? No chance at all? Again, how do you breather on your own?

to show how much better this years OL is to last year, in the 2016 season CJ was sacked 30 times in 13 games, this season Stanley has been sacked 9 times thru 6 games,

as for last year that OL allowed Wadley and Daniels both went over 1000 yards rushing making that the 1st time in Iowa's history to have 2 RB's go 1000 yards in the same season, having 2 1000 yards rushers on the same team in the same season is not something that happens every year no matter who the team is,.

bash the OL all you want if it makes you feel better.

You friggin retard, I didn't bash them at all. A simple question to you isn't bashing the OL.

With all due respect for his time at Iowa... Myers won't start another game without some kind of injury situation and I think Reynolds would start ahead of Myers. A mean thing to say, but IB getting injured opened up the future much quicker and will be a benefit by next year.

"the best way to judge the OL is not seeing anything by way of penalties" not my words, your words. Your criteria is asinine. Using your words sacks, yards per carry, etc. are far behind penalties in determining a good oline. Once again, cause for you to limit your comments and analysis until there is a subject you know something about.

Until we can get some hint of re-establishing the line of scrimmage due to our O-line getting an initial push I'm hesitant to pass out too many compliments. I'd also like to see Stanley have the time our foes get in the pocket every game.

Sacks and yards per carry are so influenced by how elusive your QB is, how quickly he gets rid of the ball, and the yards after contact from your backfield gets makes using pure numbers as a criteria relatively meaningless.

Agree, getting Welsh inside where he's great and getting a full game of live film for Wirfs just prior to the buy week is key to his continued development.

CJ was not mobile and was sacked 30 times and posters on here constantly blamed the OL for not giving a non-mobile QB time to throw,

now its a complete 180 on why you are still complaining about the OL. make up your minds. lst season thru 13 game CJ threw 17 TD passes and 1929 yards, face you people are not happy unless you make things up to bellyache about.
