Linebackers- a bit concerning

I always like looking ahead to the Future. I really think 2018 has a chance to be really special. Not just due to our talent coming back but also the schedule is very favorable at least on paper at this moment.

What I am a little bit concerned about is I can hardly recall seeing a backup linebacker get many snaps.

Not on special teams; in live game action at the linebacker position. Obviously that is mostly due to the close games that we've had but it would be really nice if going forward we have some blowouts so we can get some of these inexperienced players some time on the field prior to next year.

That would pay huge dividends for 2018.

Won't be any blowouts the rest of the year. One thing to remember. It seems when Iowa turns over their LB's or DL, its usually one or the other not both. Next season we'll have green LB's, but the front four, and back four should be very solid. If the DL continues to grow, and Nixon and Shannon add to this group, we should be very solid, and keep the LB's clean to handle their assignments.

There is some LB talent there, but with the exception of Hockaday not much experience

Amani jones and Kristen Welch are going to be good ones... mends should hold down the other spot for his senior year.

This is the third time I’ve believe that we will have replaced the entire lb corps at once, ( the angerer group and the morris group I believe). Both times the defense has struggled some the following year.

Strong line and secondary should mitigate that some next year.

I agree that strong line & back four should mitigateit some next year.

Not only will that mitigate the situation, but it will also make it a little better.

You never wish for injuries but it wouldn't be the worst thing in the world for 2018 if someone tweeked an ankle and had to sit for a few quarters. I would much prefer a huge blow out a few times

It was inevitable to break in three new backers next year. The nice thing is we will have an experienced D line all across the front ahead of them. If they are going to break in 3 new backers I like how that works out

We will be green at LB but the good news is we will not be young. I think you will see Iowa do something you they do not usually do. That is reload at a position. There is plenty of athleticism in our LB core. I love watching Jones on Kickoff. It will not be able to replace Jewell, but we wont be short on intensity at the MLB position.

2nd time.. the group of Morris, hitchens, kirksey. And then this group.. hunter was a year younger edds and angerer..

That's my guess also. Amani, Kristan and Nick. Unless Hockaday gets a spot.

I agree with the poster that said Doyle's kid plays but it will be on special teams. In time he will be very good as a starter.
