Polio vaccine - Salk at the U of Pitt (which has a great med and science depts); GLP-1s for diabetes and weight loss discovered by NIH researchers using your tax dollars but then the Drug company puts it in an injectable syringe and charges you $400 a pop or something like that, which is the crime here.

mRNA vaccines developed by Wasserman et al at the U of Penn - a Nobel prize winner - but again the drug companies get to commercialize and made all the dough.

It would be better and cheaper if our Govt would make the mass doses of drugs and get them into people (maybe there is a liability issue in this)

Insulin created by Banting and Best and the U of Toronto iirc and they gave away the patent, an open patent, yet we have drug companies who want to charge a Zillion Dollars for its delivery system.

My point, Eff Musk and Trump for cutting all this funding for research and they are STUPID. And EFF people who think research is a waste.

Do you have more examples?

And this is why we spend money for basic research, see below:
Ozempic, a medication used to treat type 2 diabetes and obesity, is derived from the venom of the Gila monster lizard.

Discovery and Development:

In the 1980s, scientists studying Gila monster venom discovered a hormone-like compound called exendin-4. This compound is similar to a hormone in humans called glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1). GLP-1 helps regulate blood sugar levels and appetite.

Based on this discovery, researchers developed a synthetic version of exendin-4 called semaglutide. Semaglutide is the active ingredient in Ozempic.

Many, if not most of the drug discoveries are founded in fundamental research efforts funded by NIH/government sources.

And it's the same with LOTS of tech stuff, as well.

The latest X-ray lithography techniques for the next generation of microchips benefitted from astrophysics and star explosion (nova/supernova) data and modeling. Absent that basic science, you don't have those newest and fastest chips.

Thanks for the reply and info. I dont expect a lot of replies especially from Orange Musk followers who just want to watch the gutting of our govt

My great uncle was on Salk’s team that created the polio vaccine. He actually was a guest on the old Mike Douglas show being interviewed about it. Crazy he ended up with an adopted nephew with polio.

And the whole Internet was pushed and funded by the Fed, DARPA along with some universities. People became billionaires because of it but they do not show any thanks for the country they live in, they want to crumple the country or ignore it
