David Biddison continues to do his part to bring Baltimore and Washington sports fans together in the name of free furniture. Back in April, the general manager at the Marlo stores promised full refunds on all purchases at his stores in Maryland and Virginia during the week leading up to opening day if the Orioles and Nationals play in the World Series. Don’t throw away those receipts…yet.
Marlo is running a similar promotion for football season, only this one doesn’t require the Ravens and Redskins to meet in the Super Bowl. In other words, there’s a chance some people might actually win free furniture.
Marlo will refund all purchases at its stores in Alexandria, Forestville, Laurel, Rockville and Fredericksburg from Aug. 17-23 if the Redskins or Ravens return the game-opening or second half-opening kickoff for a touchdown in Week 1.
“I decided on the kickoff because it’s more of an immediate reward,” Biddison said. “It would be kind of neat for people to buy their furniture this week and then three weeks later be sitting on a free couch.”
As with the baseball promotion, which Biddison said was a success no matter what happens with the Orioles and Nationals in the postseason, Marlo is taking out insurance to cover as much as $2 million in refunds. Biddison hopes the promotion “brings everyone in the area together,” with Ravens fans tuning in to watch the Redskins’ 1 p.m. kickoff against the Dolphins on Sept. 13 and Redskins fans watching the Ravens’ 4:25 p.m. kickoff at Denver with interest.
“Buying furniture should be fun to begin with, but some people think it’s a burden,” said Biddison, a Baltimore native. “It’s all about having fun. I want it to happen. I want it so bad, just to see the smiling faces. It would be off the charts.”
The Redskins haven’t returned a kickoff for a touchdown since Brandon Banks did it in 2010, while the Ravens have four kickoff returns for touchdowns in the last three years. That number doesn’t include the kick that Jacoby Jones returned for a touchdown to open the second half of the Ravens’ Super Bowl win over the 49ers in 2013. As a result of that play, Gardiners Furniture in Baltimore refunded $600,000 in merchandise as part of a similar promotion.
