That ref was cheating, needs to be banned. Lets Wriendt get away with cheap shots to the face twice, even calling stalling on Lombardi on one. Gives Wriendt the tie off a false start leg dive with 4 seconds left when Lombardi sprawls. OT was maybe a TD but should not have been there.

I didn't agree with the call but those of you taking shots at Wriedt are losers. The kid just won his 2nd state title over a guy he split matches with this year of course he is going to celebrate.

He didn't make the calls he just wrestled.

So many times over the years I have seen refs try to decide the match at the state tournament. There's 4 seconds left, Wriedt shoots off the whistle because he has to and apparently Lombardi is not supposed to defend it because then he is called for stalling. Then, to call that td in OT was an even bigger embarrassment. That was just another prime example of the refs inserting himself in the match and not allowing the kids to wrestle. It is just a shame because it tarnishes a hard fought match between two good kids.

Guess you didn't see the "He's broke" sign. Sorry son, but you just beat a guy in OT with a couple of breaks. Have fun...but be humble.

Are you arguing Lombardi didn't break? Put Wriedt in a hawk singlet and you would have been screaming for stalling on Lombardi from the second period on.

And I frankly don't give a s*** how he acted after arguably the biggest win of his lifetime. He's a freaking senior in high school. If the "he's broke" signal is the sign of a jagoff or whatever then put Terry Brands and Tony Ramos on the Jagoff All Century Team because they are adults and they do it all the time.

Yea...I am actually arguing that he didn't break...he was still moving at the end on that almost TD that they called the TD...if he was broke, he would have just let it happen. As for Tony's "he broke," I thought a few of them were unwarranted. So sorry to have offended you Mr. Wreidt.

The celebration was ok the calls were horrific. I wanted Wriedt to win I only live few miles from North Scott. He got lucky on the calls. Gable agrees.

Oh wow you are so original by calling me Mr Wriedt. How witty. Lombardi had nothing left and everyone in the arena knew it. Again, I said the call wasn't warranted. What's even less warranted is adults anonymously bashing high school kids they have never met (for the record I haven't met a single HS wrestler that was out there tonight) because a ref made bad calls. That's what I take umbrage with.

Funny to see so many here jump on the 18 year old high school student who is wrestling for his high school, and yet these same chumps can't stand to hear college students who are ineffective at their job criticized about their performance. Let's try to stay consistent.

It's easy to say now that he's thrown Tom under the bus and burned his bridge with Iowa, but I never liked the "broken" sign from Ramos. Way too melodramatic and often in poor taste, IMO.

About the ref thing. If you were at state this week you would have noticed the IAHSAA is actively trying to recruit new officials. They have had a change at the top, and I feel that is why you have seen a lot more good young officials at the tournament the last couple years. A lot of these refs are way to old. Example if you have to count your back points from a knee or standing up you shouldn't be reffing at the Iowa State Tournament. Some do not have the reaction time necessary to keep up with chain wrestling.
Also some are the biggest ego maniacs you'll ever come across, and you don't dare question those guys. I might fall into the same category sometimes, but that is why I don't officiate. Hopefully they can weed out those who need to give it up.

Obviously emotions run high after winning, but the celebration seemed a little too in your face considering the questionable calls at the end. The thought I had this morning was if that was my son that won would I approve of his actions. I dont think I could. I'm not saying that it would warrant chewing out or ripping him, but a quiet talk explaining that he received some favorable calls (which he had no say in) and that in your face (that was my perception) celebrations are probably not the way to handle it. I do not know if there was history between the two but it just didnt seem like the appropriate response given the situation. That being said I didnt and sometimes still dont react like I should in the moment.

That was hard to watch. I don't recall a finals match ever where I legitimately believed a ref had it out for a kid like that. And then Wyatt wreidt's celebration immediately made me despise him. To the point when ISU wrestles nebby, I might be cheering for Gremmel.

I am not very familiar with either kid but as a neutral spectator it makes me sick to my stomach to witness such poor officiating. Couldnt believe my eyes at first and then just started fuming that it was allowed to happen.

I didn't have a dog in that fight either....a Nebraska wrestler against a MSU football player o_O but it was shocking the way the ref decided the match....thought given the circumstances Lombardi was pretty classy afterwards and Wreidt was the opposite.....what wieght does he project for NE? doesnt look tall enough or have a frame to put enough weight on for HWT.....gonna cut to 97?

Rocky is a great kid, and he handled the situation with grace. Hats off to him. Wish he weren't headed to MSU, but I wish him the best. He represented himself, his family, and his school with a ton of class in the face of huge disappointment. Good job out of Rocky.

That's who it reminded me of. Now, Wyatt might be a great kid who just let his emotions get the better of him...it happens. I just thought it was funny given the breaks.

I'm from the school that says act like you've been there before..and he has. Celebrate fine, but respect your opponent.

Nobody is bashing Wriedt because the ref made a bad call(s). They are bashing him because he acted like a punk after the match...a match that he should have lost if not for the aforementioned bad call.

If you put a red N on his singlet he would have fit in perfectly In CHA last weekend. Oh wait, looks like he will fit in perfectly with Manning and that bunch.

I just saw the replay. That would be a tough pill to swallow. He handled a tough loss better than the other kid handled a questionable win.
I think I had something to add to this thread then Fan in Black posts something and all I can do is watch that girl repeatedly shake her ass so I got nothing!o_Oo_Oo_O
Oh yeah that ref should be stoned to death...
