In Fran's first year as coach there was a photo taken of Fran, Gatens, and 2 other players (maybe Jarryd Cole and Basabe) and everyone was looking real excited as Fran (or maybe Gatens) was holding a birthday cake. Does anyone remember this?

Ah, Cully Payne? Brings back memories, before Fran got me mad again.
About a month ago I was talking to Mike Gatens at a chance meeting and I asked him about Matt. He said, "Matt loved playing for Fran but loves being an assistant coach for Fran even more". Mike said he felt Fran was a really good coach but even a better person. Truly a players coach. Interesting take.
Asked if Matt liked being back in Iowa City, he said, not as much as my wife. Grandkids are close by. Great line.

That is true. Matt has said that Fran is a great basketball mind and developer of talent.And the pay is better.
