I hope Fran really looks into the graduate transfer option if a scholly opens up. There are some quality players who will be available to try and get. I just can't believe that all these teams get transfers. And before I get crucified I realize we have Uthoff who was a transfer. I think Fran has to start using this to his advantage.

Even though this would help, I'm not sure a graduate transfer would be willing to come here next year. Usually they want to step into a NCAA tournament bound team as the final piece. We have no idea whether that's realistic for us at this point.

I had started a thread yesterday on this but Cullen Neal from New Mexico is a grad transfer 6'4 PG with two years of left to play. He had some issues with turnovers which led to death threats from UNM fans but he looks like he could be a real scorer as a combo guard.

So he likes his players to feel entitled to starting spots and PT? Yikes.

I don't think that is necessarily the case, but you have to remember Fran had to bring in the recruits when he first arrived. Iowa was coming off an 11-18 season or something like that. His previous class was Aaron White, Josh Olgesby, and Olaseni (not exactly top recruits). Fran had to sell his soul to get Woody, Gessell to come here. I would not of been surprised if Fran promised them starting positions from day 1. I mean you had 2 top 100 recruits near by and if he doesn't land them one wonders if he is still here or if we get to the NCAA's. I think he had to bring them in and of course probably made some promises on playing time. I think everyone can agree that Olseni was the better than center than Woody. But I am sure Fran made a promise to get him here.

One wonders what will happen as we move forward. I am sure Fran does not have to make those promises anymore and now has slowly started to work his way into Chicago, STL, and other major cities for recruits. This year the state of Iowa had some good players available. I think Fran took them and is thinking I can mold these guys into good players.

Fran doesn't think it's fair to the kids already in the program.

Which is fine if every player already in the program is giving it 100% for those others around him.

If somebody decided on their own to transfer or if somebody were encouraged to get out of town, I'd think we should go after a PG transfer for sure. There COULD be better offers available to that player, but effectively they get to be a starter on a P5 team that's got a great TV contract and plays against some of the best competition.

Fran needs to get with it. There is no argument that players want to play, but it is also true that players want to win. Indiana is a case in point...we have two graduate transfers. Where would Indiana be without Max Biefelt and Nick Zeisloft? Winning has a way of smoothing over playing time concerns.

I just think about the Monte Morris/Deandre Kane situation. Morris came in thinking he would start and play a lot as a Freshman because he was the best point guard on the roster. Fred then brought in Kane in May. Monte wasn't happy about it but it was the best thing for the program. In the end Monte learned a lot from Deandre and everyone wound up better off. I just think coaches should never pass up an opportunity to improve their roster. If a kid doesn't like it they're probably a little soft mentally anyway.

I have a feeling the transfer rules will change and there will be less of it going forward.

If this is truly about students wanting to transfer to a school that has the graduate degree they are seeking then make them sit a year and take up a scholarship slot while doing so. That would dramatically reduce the number of transfers each year.

Now if it can be shown that graduate transfers have been earning graduate degrees at a rate above that for undergrads then a good debate would be on tap. If that were the case however I would expect we would have already heard about it.

Guys, almost 1/3 of basketball players transfer. We are talking the minds of 20 year old kids here.

In that situation......Kane also owned Morris from day 1 in practice. Morris was more ok with not starting because of that.

Let's not forget that UNI has utilized transfers (not grad transfers) with some great success over the past 10 years.

Heck, this year's team included two of them in Washbun and Jesperson....who are two guys that would have a spot in nearly every D-I program.

Fairly confident that if you polled players and asked if they would rather play 30 minutes on a team that wasn't going to see or have a chance to advance in March or play 20 on a team on team that could make a run with the addition of a guy or two, I think you would have a high percentage opt for winning over losing. Every player interviewed post-game has about the same thing ' You play all season to make the tournament. This is what you dream about.'

Well Kane was acquired before Morris even stepped foot on campus but your point remains that you get the best players available. And Morris did start and play a ton as a freshman even with Kane. Never saw anywhere that he was mad either.

Morris has openly said he was mad about it when he found out but it ended up being a blessing.
