Losing to champion

They lost to UCONN Tom Davis's last season in the Sweet 16 when UCONN won it all. I think Duke in the early 90s. Otherwise, you'd probably have to go back to Louisville in 1980. And that was obviously the last Final Four team. Oh, and Bill Russell's San Francisco team in what...1956?

I'm not sure if there have been others. I'm too lazy to look it up as well.

In addition to the several already mentioned, let's not forget that in 1997 we lost to Kentucky. This was during their 3-year run of appearances in the National Title Game. That was the one year out of the three that they actually lost the title game (to Arizona). They won it in 1996 and 1998.

In 1996 we lost to Arizona, obviously just one year before they won it all in 1997 (over Kentucky).

So our draws have definitely had a National Championship caliber flavor to them pretty darn often.

There is no doubt that Iowa has NOT been very lucky with the ncaa tourney draws.

Hate to say it, 2 years ago when we were in the play-in game that was our best draw in a long time!!!!

Vs Tennessee
Next round vs UMASS
Next round vs Mercer
Then vs Michigan in Sweet 16 who we split with.

Iowa has lost to four teams in NCAA tournaments who eventually went on to win the title: Duke in 1991 and 1992; Connecticut in 1999; Villanova in 2016.

Don't forget SF in 1956 and Louisville in 1980.

How many years has this happened to Iowa? Too lazy to look it up.
I don't know, but ISU has lost to the champion two of the past five years. Happened on the opponents pseudo-home court, too -- Kentucky at Louisville and UConn at New York.

Doesn't make the losses easy to take, but easier than losing to UAB.

Don't forget Jacksonville in 1970 who went on to lose to UCLA in the final.

Also, MSU in Detroit in 2000. And NC in Charlotte in 2005.

Iowa lost to Villanova by 19 points, while Oklahoma lost
to them by 44 points this year in the NCAA Tournament.

Along those lines, when's the last time Iowa got an upset opponent in the 2nd or 3rd round? Almost without exception, as long as I can remember, they always get the favorite winning their games.

Part of the problem is that Iowa has been in that 7-10 seed range quite a bit over the years. That lends itself to playing a lot of 1 and 2 seeds. While obviously not all of them, but 1s and 2s have a far greater chance of making the Finals than the other seeds.

Since 1985 (when the tourney went to 64 teams), I'm seeing 17 appearances. Of those, 8 times have fallen into the 7-10 seed range, and another 3 times they've been either 6 or 11. That's 11 of 17 appearances where they would have played a 1, 2 or 3 seed. When you are consistently the lower seed after the 1st round, you are going to lose a lot of games.

Not exactly: Losing to San Francisco in the finals and Louisville in the semis would count, I think, as losing to teams that won the title.
Also lost teams that placed second: LaSalle,, Jacksonville, Kentucky

.

Iowa was down 35 and Villanova substituted quite liberally.

Just think, clone with a groan, you could have remained silent on this matter and retained whatever little credibility you might have had.

There is no overwhelming discrepancies in minutes played by the Nova team that faced Iowa and the same Nova team that demolished Oklahoma. To even suggest otherwise is foolish.

Iowa scored more points, surrendered fewer points and appeared to be the better of the two opponents when facing Nova. The elephant in this particular room was that Iowa was not a number two seeded team coming from supposedly the best basketball conference anywhere and having the distinct advantage of having played rounds one and two of the tourney just minutes from its campus. That would be OU.

Once you realize that a 44 point difference in a game of the magnitude of the Nova - OU contest is virtually unheard of, then you will see how really dumb your post was and remains.

Look who has duty for clone with a groan tonight !

Perhaps you would like to take a stab at defending the post from the way too frequent isu 'non-fan' that I responded to here. Are you of the same delusional thought that Nova had to put forth such a Herculean effort against OU? Are you struggling to comprehend that the 44 point differential was the most in the NCAA tourney for a game at this particular juncture? Enlighten all of us.
