I thought this was America.

Under the law, porn publishing websites can either demand that users present a digitized ID card based on a form of government ID, or simply show their government-issued ID. A vague, third option also allows companies to use “any commercially reasonable method that relies on public or private transactional data to verify the age of the person.”

So, in theory, porn sites (or third-party services) could mine users’ credit card, insurance, employment, bank, or other financial information to find verifiable proof of age— which some already do. But for the most part, adult sites will probably stick to driver’s licenses.

Without reading the link (I'm lazy), I'm wondering if this is to prevent minors from viewing porn.
I guess that’s the logic. Not sure this is the best path, but I don’t mind it to an extent.

Like for FanDuel I had to do Face ID and Government ID

Well, fortunately for the people living in Louisiana the GOP hasn't heard about VPN's yet.

Are you also going to comb the parks and wooded areas for the copious amounts of discarded porno mags?

The internet can all be controlled by the parents if they care to do so. This is a nanny state thing.

I’m just now reading the summary under the link where it says the law applies to websites where more than one-third of the content is pornographic. How do they even measure that? I wanna see the website that argues exemption because only 33.275% of its content is pron…

I’m sure you do but this isn’t about even making a purchase. Parents likely purchase the internet and tv access and can apply blockers at any time without getting the state involved.

Maybe the porn sites should require someone to make a purchase instead of just a self-declaration that they're 18?

They’re going to have to put in a butt and boob vs standard post counter up on here.

Pornhub should go 67% cat pics.

How do parents do that? Hell, the schools hand out devices now days.
Pretty easy to do on your router/device level and school devices are monitored and have their own blockers. If you’re providing access to the internet to your kids it’s your own responsibility to understand how to monitor and block things you don’t want them to have access to.

Can you imagine the support calls for this kind of thing?

"Hi. I'm having some trouble figuring out this porn ID thing. And I'm hard up. Why? 'Cause I really need to jerk off. My balls are so blue, they'd make Papa Smurf jealous."

Well, I’m glad the GOP are still willing to tackle issues of grave importance to the American people.
Dem governor, by the way. All of us Libs own this. Although, a Dem in Louisiana is pretty conservative, and he'd get steamrolled on this if he'd opposed it.

Then why isn't it the parents' responsibility to ensure their children don't purchase alcohol or tobacco products? Why's that responsibility put on the sellers of such items?

Purchasing them and accessing them are completely different. Your argument is pretty terrible on this.

Oh, parents are indeed responsible for preventing access to them. Let the authorities find out that your kid is drinking beer out of your kegerator without you stopping it and see what happens.

Because the government imposed rules on private businesses for the good of society. You know, the thing you seem to hate in absolutely every other thread.

You’re the libertarian suddenly supporting government banning something. Why are you asking?

I actually think this law is stupid, but I'm just making the contrarian argument in the spirit of debate.

Right so if you purchase beer do you put a scanner on your fridge that requires government id or a credit card to access it? No you might put a lock on a beer fridge or a liquor cabinet which is just as easy as putting a blocker on your internet.

A government ID scanner in your house?

Man, we sure dive down some rabbit holes on this board.
