Love it, hate it or never heard of it?

My Canadian grandmother only made two desserts, crème caramel and apple pie. Apple pie always had a slice of cheddar to go along with it. I love it!!

Thankfully, the custard did not.

The trick, counterintuitively, is to use a pretty sharp, aged cheddar and make sure it is melted evenly. The contrast in the tangy cheese and the sweet pie makes for an excellent culinary experience.
This is coming from our resident champion of qc-style pizza so everybody take this with rock-sized grains of salt. ;)

Apples, dried fruit (cranberries, apricots and figs), nuts (pecans and cashews) and some cheese is a regular meal for me.

But I also eat a lot of pie...
That’s what I like too, especially when I’m drinking.

While I don’t eat much pie, I do like to pair cheese and apples together.
I do this for snacks at work, cut up an apple and a few pieces of colby and it's really good together. I would think it would be good on a pie also although I've never tired it. But I can't think of the last time I had a piece of apple pie. Blueberry is my favorite so that's what I always get.

I have heard of it, I have never tried it, I really don’t think I want to. It sounds disgusting.

Try that with a sharp cheddar. Soo good. Like eating prime rib with horseradish or tomatoes with Plantation Dressing.

Quad City Staple. It was the house dressing at the Plantation Restaurant in the during the 1940s-1960s. Big Venue that had an illegal Casino upstairs. People came from far and wide to enjoy a weekend. They brought in big name talent to perform.

1 1/2 pint UNITS: US INGREDIENTS 1 pint mayonnaise 1 (8 ounce) bottle French dressing 2 teaspoons garlic powder 2 teaspoons anchovy paste 1 ⁄ ounces parmesan cheese.

The above recipe is for whimps. We make it with Western Dressing (Target) and an entire bud of garlic, plus an entire tin of anchovies. Then we add as much Parmesean as we want. If you want it as a veggie dip, you add enough Parm to make it pretty thick.

Have been doing this for years,... slice of apple pie with a slice of sharp cheddar on top,... Into the microwave for 30-40 seconds,... topped with s scoop of vanilla ice cream...

Cheese and apple pie sounds awful.

Adding ice cream onto a slice of cheese just made me throw up in my mouth.

Heard of it a long time ago, was aware of the strange combination even as a child. I love apple pie and I like cheddar cheese so I would probably try it if it was given to me, I just never have had the opportunity to do so.

Cheese and ice cream at both dairy. I am shocked at how many people find this gross. It’s like saying “I love milk, but butter is disgusting”
Let me answer with a question: for breakfast would you put nacho cheese on your favorite cinnamon flavored cereal?

I’ve heard of it but only tried it once and found it terrible.

How many people were aware that until the turn of the 20th century it was common for apple pie to have pieces of salt pork in it? And that Calvin Coolidge’s favorite food of all time was his mother’s salt pork and apple pie?

As for me...I’m not a fan of apple pie. I absolutely love pies of all kinds from savory to sweet, custard to fruit. But Apple is the most bland and boring of them all beyond Indiana’s absolutely terrible sugar creme pies. I’ll even take chess, buttermilk and vinegar pies over apple.

Instead of the bland pies like apple and sugar creme, I prefer intensely flavored fruit pies like blackberry, blueberry, sour cherry, rhubarb (with or without strawberry or blackberry), and dewberry or Citrus curd pies whether key lime, sour orange, lemon, calamondin, or kumquat. But I’m also partial to Yoder’s (a famous Florida Amish restaurant in Sarasota) original take on the Peanut Butter pie that has been partially coopted by the Pennsylvania Amish restaurants as well which like the Amish butterscotch pie uses a pudding base.

It's really quite good, but to each his own,.. And this is going to sound radical for HROT, but the fact that you don't care for this dessert combination doesn't make me think less of you...

No, because it is spicy. And cereal does not pair well with cheese.

Cheddar is not spicy and pairs excellently with apples, figs, grapes and other sweet fruits.

You must not cook, eh?
I was responding to your surprise of people not liking one type of dairy over another depending upon application. Just substitute melted cheddar cheese for nacho cheese. Cinnamon cereal is at least in the ballpark of the flavor profile of apple pie. Melted cheddar on cinnamon cereal would simply be gross.

But again, you are looking at this in simplistic, not culinary terms.

In cooking, flavor profile, spice level, salt level, consistency and many other factors play into whether things go well together. Thus, talking about nacho cheese on cinnamon cereal compared to melted cheddar on apple pie is an utterly meaningless comp. No one would do the former, whereas many, many people enjoy the latter.

One of my favorite things about cooking/eating is discovering new and intriguing flavor combinations. Maybe you should try it before pronouncing it “disgusting.”

I was in the heard of it, haven't tried it, sounds gross camp. I did not pronounce it disgusting although it does sound disgusting. In any event, although it is a risky claim to make in the HROT billionaire renaissance men's club, I would venture to say I've tried and cooked more food in more different ways than the vast majority of men (@FSUTribe76 not included, obviously).
