Loving bill maher again

While I think he's intelligent, and does have some good takes/thoughts as they apply to either side...I just think he's an ass overall. Being a douche and riling up both sides doesn't make him funny, which he isn't.
Instant validation of Maher’s point.

And the guy is hilarious. I saw him at the Civic Center in Des Moines in 2017. His standup is even better than Real Time. I would go to see another of his shows in a heartbeat.

I think he has his hits and misses, basically. Monologue will sometimes have some really good stuff. The writing on the show isn't bad and the mid-show bit is usually the most consistently funny.

New rules is OK, and the final bit alternates between something a bit overdone and or repetitive or something pretty sharp.

His personality? I guess there is sort of a smarmy douche angle you could go for... if you take him too seriously. But I don't, I think he just lets it fly, is shooting the shit... that coupled with the irreverence and the sometimes insightful commentary make it a show I've consistently come back to for years.

Could someone younger/fresher perhaps do a better rendition of this sort of show than Bill does? Probably -- but nobody does. Bill gets a big a thumbs up from me for being his own thing all these years.

To each his own, I think he's full of himself and unfunny. He's not correct or funny often enough, for me, to get away with being a dbag, which is 100% of the reason I quit watching Real Time.

While I agree with his cancel culture comments in many cases, there are times it is an appropriate response. I do think that comics, in general, should be given a pass. Not everyone likes every comic. If you don't like the jokes someone does, don't listen to them, don't go to their shows, and generally just ignore them. They are out there trying to make money and even if you don't like them, there are others that do.

For example, you may not find jokes about rape funny. You may think there are no situations where a joke that even insinuates rape is funny. But a comedian might make a joke involving it. I certainly don't think there is much to laugh about, but I don't think people should destroy a comedian just because they made a joke about rape. That doesn't mean they have to listen to it, but calling for an all out boycott is stupid. Now, if that comedian was actually raping people, or was going on non-gig platforms and starts talking about how rape should be allowed or something, then yes, that is a horrible human being that has earned the consequences. But for just doing their job (even if it's in a way you don't like)? I'm with Maher on that front.

Yeah, that's what I hate, and I never do: trying to remove someone/thing from the public sphere because I don't personally agree with or like what they said.

By all means, write editorials, voice your opinion, withhold your money. But don't try to "cancel" the person. I lose respect for you the second you do that. It's small minded stuff and I refuse to participate. I think that's the problematic essence of "cancel culture" and what we need less of.

That’s cool. Like you said, to each his own. If you don’t find him funny, you don’t find him funny. I just think he has a point about people shutting down and getting offended over a joke.

I'm indifferent on Maher. You have to be in the mood for the formula they took directly from The Daily Show. He does it well, but it's paint by number for these writers now.

Mannerisms, dress, speech, attitude. Some people get bent over stuff like that. But those are just aesthetic qualities... so meh. I try not to judge someone in shabby clothes, or that mumbles, or whatever... so it goes the other way too.
He has a great take on race. He knows when it comes down to it, we are just people. The guy on your team , at work, and at home are people who deserve respect and everyone deserves this. He emphasizes talking to each other and listening rather than automatically dismissing someone who doesn't share your beliefs.

Keep hoping he comes back to the Midwest again at some point, would like to see him live.
Not sure where you live or what's considered a reasonable drive for you, but Maher will be in Minneapolis on June 5 and Indianapolis on June 6.

Generally speaking, political comedy is not funny to me. Politicians however are unintentionally hilarious. The only political comedian I laugh at is Lewis Black. Not because of his take on things but strictly his use of **** in his diatribes. Early on Dennis Miller was mildly amusing but he fell victim to his success and became predictable.

Wasn't Politically Incorrect which was the PG version of this show several years before The Daily Show?

Never watched that show. Per wiki, it does sound more like Maher's current show than the Daily Show. The Maher clips that get shared the most though are the segments where he plays news media clips of politicians or others saying dumb things and then hits us with the jokes and lessons. I think that's what reminds me of Jon Stewart but it looks like I have it backwards. I totally forgot about the 9/11 thing with Maher.

Gotta be some actual comedians coming to those areas I would hope.

People need to respect the rights of others. What is right and what is wrong with this world incorporates more than one person’s opinion. Parents walk a tight line with their children as they want to “protect” them but they are obligated to “ let them go” too. Parents need to parent their kids..they needn’t worry about befriending them. Kids want to love mom and dad...the don’t wanna hang out with them.

This guy has the recipe to unite us. He mocks both sides taking themselves too seriously. His explaining jokes to idiots is genius.

Why did you start loving him "again"? Is it because he started calling off the Left? You didn't like him when he called out the Right? That pill a little too tough to swallow? You sound like part of the problem in present day
