Luka Garza emergence

Might force me to revise my projected starting 5 for
November...........

Go Hawks :)
I thought it would be about a 50/50 split between Garza and Kriener with Kriener starting. Now I'm leaning towards 60/40 with Garza getting more minutes, and the start.

He sure has been effective! Different combinations of players makes a difference too. Who meshes well together etc. He seems to play within himself and let the game come to him which I like.

Luka is an actual center with some skills. Vs matchups that aren't more athletic, he'll do well and sometimes dominate. He has tools that will help him equalize greater athleticism. But there are likely to be games where he'll be taken to school this year, and the more reactionary will try to say he's a 'wasted scholly'. Let's LOL that now.

You're all making way too much out of this trip to Europe remember Peter Jok led the team in scoring as a freshman on their European trip and hardly played at all his freshman season.
Thats a fact, but I'm pretty sure that Luka will be in the regular rotation. Its one thing to say that Jok led the team in scoring, but he had so many holes in his game that he wasn't ready physically or mentally to play as a freshman. From what we've seen of Garza in his prep career, and so far in Iowa thats not the case. He has the body to play in the post now. I also think he has the attitude to contribute on both ends of the floor. Yes he'll have some rough patches, but i'd bet he's every bit as prepared to play early as Cook was last season, maybe even more so.

I think Garza gets 16-18 min/game. I would allow for more time but according to NCAA rules, players are allowed but 5 personal fouls before fouling out and fouling is the inevitable and formidable hurdle facing all freshman Centers entering the B10. Some adjust better than others. We'll see about Luka.

Hard not to be optimistic about Garza, but I agree with those not taking too much from a couple of games against European "all stars." I think Kriener and Garza will cover most of the minutes at center, and both will play at least 15-16 mpg.

This is a good problem to have. I see Luka with more upside because of his ability to not only stretch the floor with his shooting ability but to also take on the role of a more traditional post player who can score down low.

He is young, though, as others have pointed out, and will go through plenty of growing pains. Both Garza and Kriener will have important roles no matter what. That is pretty for certain.

Garza has certainly played very well against all of the competition he's faced. Kreiner has played well but not quite as well as Garza it appears. The combination of the two give the Hawks some quality depth at center, true low post players.

Garza does look like he has a very high upside.

I hope he keeps it up. The team didn't have a problem going up and down the court last year. He can help add another element when things slow in the half court.

Totally agree, Luka also plays with constant energy.... really hoping his play becomes infectious for Cook.

Just a tap the breaks thought, as I don't expect Garza to be putting up 22 in a half (or a game for that matter).

He won't get any breaks from the stripes in early league play. It's getting to be NBA like in that a rep has to be earned to get a call or a no call. The good news is we've got plenty of fouls to give inside.

I wonder if there's a chance Fran may let someone like Cook or Baer stay on the floor after a couple of first half fouls knowing we've got depth or if he has an even quicker hook. It will be interesting for sure.

Yes folks shouldn't take anything from the stats of these games (good or bad). The competition is so poor it's hard to gauge anything of substance. The team is benefiting from extra practices and spending more time together, but the opponents have been unable to put up a fight from a physical standpoint. Hopefully they will get one game on the trip that is a bit more competitive.

It's hard for me to put Luka in the emerging category when he's a 4-star with a ton of high major offers including Louisville and he scored a ton of points and grabbed a number of rebounds in the PTL already. It probably means despite his pedigree many have 'overlooked' him. It's likely due to the fact that he's not a huge dunker as a big which folks notice.

Tap the brakes a little because as others have pointed out we could find better competition at the local YMCA than what we have seen so far.... but it's playing games as a team and a good experience. In addition he's a freshman and in the B1G the zebras love to get whistle happy on big men in year 1. There could be a lot of nights with 2-3 quick whistles for gettting in the proximity of an opponent. It's great we have multiple options.

Agreed, playing as a team, bonding on the road, different lineups are all huge benefits for this young team.

Really think he could help the team this year. I'm still hoping he ends up joining the team once baseball is out of the picture till next spring.

Maybe but I think he really wants to redshirt to play with Patrick 3 years.

I think the assumption from many fans was that Connor was not that good but he might just surprise some people.

Dude.... the posts were about how he 'might' start and will struggle against athletic competition.

Nobody was really making all that much out of what can only be described as complete and total Bill Russell like domination

Yeesh. Interesting fans would think that, considering he's an ESPN top 100/4-star recruit...

I agree completely but only look at how many were so concerned about him walking on. That was really 'code' for 'I don't think he's any good'. I'm not saying he's an all-American but I think Connor has a chance to surprise some of these same fans by his play and contributions.

Really enjoyed watching him in the first exhibition game.
It made me think all of the scout services screwed up by not making him a 4 star recruit!:)

I've been on Luka's Bandwagon, really since his Freshman year.
He just worked so hard and that usually created good things, then it just kept building
& building. Luka did help that Hawkeyes in his freshman year, quite a lot.
