Training camp begins Sep 28. Only 20 players will be allowed to participate.

15 roster spots plus 2 two-way contracts are available for these 20 players.

Detroit, however, has already decided on who gets the 2 two-way contracts. Luka will occupy the second two-way spot next season, after the Pistons signed former UCLA forward Chris Smith to a two-way contract on draft night.

Not to be Captain Obvious, but with both two-way spots taken, Tyler Cook's time in Detroit is probably up.

NBA Key Roster Dates:
  • September 28 – Training camp begins. 20 players are allowed
  • October 17 – Projected cut down date from 20 to 17 (15 + 2 Two Way contracts)
  • October 19 – NBA regular season begins

Most of the fans on the Detroit Piston forum would be more than happy to release Okafor, and the 5PTs/2RB's he provided for them last year, and replace him with Luka immediately to be their third center. On the other hand, I seriously doubt that Garza would be willing to be a third anything.
Okafor is one of the biggest 1 and done busts ever

True enough, but you have to be on the roster to get into games, so baby steps.....

The Pistons must have a need for or at least high hopes for Isaiah Livers, who has a bit of a history of being injured. Given that his college stats are remarkably similar to Wieskamps's, you would think that perhaps he should have been given the two-way contract instead of Luka, who is reliably durable and productive.

EDIT: Btw, Okafor has been in the NBA 6 years now. Crazy.

Depends on their cap space. If they can keep Garza at the current rookie minimum but think he'll outperform Okafor, it could very well be worth it to them to cut Okafor. It's not like the combo of Garza and Okafor will break the bank if JO isn't on the roster.

I just looked, the Pistons are over their cap for 21-22 (by $8ish mil), but Garza being on a 2 way doesn't count, so he's good. IIRC, if they were to cut Okafor and he were to sign elsewhere, he'd count against the cap this year, but not next year. Also, the cap hold for Okafor for next year is $1.7 mil, Garza's is $1.5 mil, so, cutting Okafor might be worth it since his pay won't hurt them this year, and if he signs, it would help them next year.

Okafor has averaged 8.2 ppg or LESS over the last 4 seasons.

Last year, with Detroit, he averaged just 5.4 ppg and 2.4 rebounds/game in just under 13 minutes/game.

And, unlike Garzilla, he is a horrible 3 point shooter.

Here are Okafor's stats in his 6 year NBA career:

247 Games played

116 Games Started

10.4 Points/Game

4.7 Rebounds/Game

.542 FG%

.222 Three Point %

.676 FT%

Six, but he has not lived up to his billing out of college. He is still just 25, so I expect to see him in the league for quite a few more years. He will be a fit somewhere.

My bad. 6 years, 5 different teams.

Here are his earnings over the 6 years:

$4,582,680: 2015-2016 (76'ers)
$4,788,840: 2016-2017 (76'ers)
$4,995,120: 2017-2018 (Raptors, 76'ers & Nets)
$1,567,007: 2018-2019 (Pelicans)
$1,596,081: 2019-2020 (Pelicans)
$1,882,867: 2020-2021 (Pistons)
$19,412,595 TOTAL

This upcoming season he is scheduled to make $2,130,023

it will be interesting to see where Tyler ends up. Hope he saved some of the money he's made over the last couple years
I remember for his first few years in the NBA, I believe Jeff Hornacek said he was living off the amount of money he would have made using his degree and saving the rest. After a few years and he was established, he didn't have to limit himself and his family that way. That is likely a good model for these young guys when they are trying to carve a spot in the NBA, at least until they land a second contract or have guaranteed money for more than a year.

The only NBA game I’ve ever been to was a Mavs game that year. Brian Cardinal played about 5 minutes and had 3 fouls. Good times.
I was travelling in Indiana for work and one of our salesmen, a Purdue grad, took me to a Purdue home game. Cardinal was playing (yes, I know that makes me old) and I remember he looked like the walking wounded with all the wraps and braces. He left it all on the court. Looked like one of those guys that you love to have on your team, but love to hate if he is on the other team.

Check this out & Watch:

He doesn't have to be a great defender, just limit it to not a complete liability so they don't have to take him off the court when the other team tries to abuse him with the pick-n-roll. He is a different player than Niang, but when Niang improved his D (not a strength but not the liability it was), that and an improved 3-pt % moved him from the end of the bench to the regular rotation and a longer term contract after a two-way deal. Luka's offense has never been a question about being good enough to get him on the floor, just if he can stay there with good enough defense.

Agreed. If he can get to slightly below average, he can have a pretty good career because his offense plays in the NBA.

And yes, some of defense is desire and learning how to play it. He also won't be asked to guard the like of Giannis, Embiid, or other more athletic bigs much as he won't be on the court with them much.

Yes, a lot of people don't understand the business side of the NBA. It would be simpler if it were just a matter of best talent, but contractual agreements sometimes mean a more talented player might not be able to be added to the team because of that prior commitment.

I hear Mackey Arena is louder than any arena. Is that true?

It was loud, but I have been in louder. What I remember was just how narrow the seats were as we were on a corner not far off the floor.

Yeah I don't know what warranted Livers a contract before Garza.

Yeah, if and when I ever watch NBA basketball games, I don't see much defense. So I'm not sure why everybody is so focused on Garza's lack of so-called defense.
