And the best part is, he could've had more if Detroit wasn't your typical current NBA team that wasted 30 possessions just passing the ball around the perimeter until somebody jacks up a 3 (contested or otherwise).

There's a factually legitimate reason why NBA legends are in the same boat with disillusioned fans of the what the game is turning into.

Garza is probably thinking "well sh** if everyone else is jacking up 3s, I might as well. At least I can make them....."

20 and 14 tonight in just 26 minutes! Come on Pistons, give him a contract!

This is a good story on the roster jigsaw puzzle the Pistons have to figure out and why it might be a minute or two before they give Luka a contract.

There are 15 roster spots plus TWO two-way contracts available.

First, a summary:

When do the Detroit Pistons really have to make roster decisions?

The first time Pistons General Manager Troy Weaver has to make any roster decisions is at training camp, which starts on Sep 28. Only 20 players will be allowed to participate.

NBA Key Roster Dates:

  • September 28 – Training camp begins. 20 players are allowed

  • October 17 – Projected cut down date to 17 players (15 on the roster, TWO on two-way contracts)

  • October 19 – NBA regular season begins

The full story:

Remember when Luka would sometimes struggle from the FT line?

Luka Garza:
26 minutes (of 40)

3-6 (50%) from 3 point range
3-6 (50%) from 2 point range
6-12 (50%) Overall Shooting
5-5 (100%) FTs

20 Points
14 Rebounds (4 offensive)
3 Assists

He has got to be averaging a double double in summer league
and 30 screens a game
Hard #s to ignore.

You can’t under estimate the value of having a big man who can hit the 3

Pick and pop all night long

Cook will get waived

And Garza’s teammates know that he will share the ball and are starting to realize he can make it rain

If Luka doesn't make the team, it won't be because he's being ignored. I think the commentators talk about him more than any of the other Detroit players, with the possible exception of Cunningham.

And despite the Connor haters, if the Detroit PG was as good as feeding Luka down on the low post when he had his man at a disadvantage, he would probably be averaging another 6-8 points a game.

Garza would likely have been a high lottery pick 30 years ago. Poor man’s Patrick Ewing.

You are pretty on point with this statement and why a once big fan of the NBA is no longer all that interested. Chucking up 3's and scoring does not equal good and fun basketball to watch. Only fantasy league players think so.

That's a weird comparison. Ewing played almost exclusively back to the basket in the post.

From that era, I'd liken Luka more to older Arvydas Sabonis.
Ewing had a really nice baseline mid-range jump shot in his toolbox. But aside from that, yes he was a down low guy.

Detroit signed him to a two way deal.
For those wondering like myself who had to look up what a 2 way deal is about. Here are 2 things I found worth while

Two-way contracts are contracts that allow for a player to play for both the NBA and the G League while being under the control of an NBA franchise for the duration of that season. These contracts are limited to two per team and can only be given to players with less than four years of NBA experience.

For the 2020–21 season, which was shortened. to 72 games and paired with a truncated 2020–21 NBA G League season, the NBA allowed a significant increase in salary for two-way contracts from an initial $81,955 minimum to an overall salary worth up to $449,155. The amount of time allowed with the NBA team also increased from 45 total days to 50 games. Even this restriction was eventually lifted, permitting two-way players to play the entire regular season and the 2021 NBA Playoffs. Players going over the initial 50-game cap receive a veteran's minimum salary. However, as of April 2021, it is currently unknown if these alterations will be made permanent.
