How cool would it be if Cook got Detroit's other two way contract? Wishful thinking, I know.
Yes it would be cool. But it isn't happening. Cook's time in the summer league has vanished the last few games. I think Detroit is moving on without him in their plans for this season. They may offer him a G League spot though just to keep him close since they liked what he did at the end of last year.

It is too bad they couldn't put Cook's athleticism into Garza's body because you'd have an NBA all star with that combo.

Was hoping to make the team. Saw he can spend no more than 45 days in the NBA. Going to be hard watching the g league games.

What sucks is that Isaiah Livers, also a 2nd Round pick, signed a 3 year / $4,456,874 contract with the Detroit Pistons, including $2,620,778 guaranteed.

This is what he is scheduled to be paid during the 3 years:

2021-2022: $1,057,260
2022-2023: $1,563,518
2023-2024: $1,836,096

Cook's body is NBA ready. If Cook had developed an offensive game half as good as Garza's he's would probably have an NBA contract. Not improving that part of his game before, during, and after he left Iowa is what is holding him back.
I also believe that there is also an NBA stigma that precedes Iowa players with the "they can't play defense". Something White, Marble, and Uhthoff has experienced first hand....

Livers is good. But come on, Luka would be equally as valuable to the Pistons.

For those wondering like myself who had to look up what a 2 way deal is about. Here are 2 things I found worth while

Two-way contracts are contracts that allow for a player to play for both the NBA and the G League while being under the control of an NBA franchise for the duration of that season. These contracts are limited to two per team and can only be given to players with less than four years of NBA experience.

For the 2020–21 season, which was shortened. to 72 games and paired with a truncated 2020–21 NBA G League season, the NBA allowed a significant increase in salary for two-way contracts from an initial $81,955 minimum to an overall salary worth up to $449,155. The amount of time allowed with the NBA team also increased from 45 total days to 50 games. Even this restriction was eventually lifted, permitting two-way players to play the entire regular season and the 2021 NBA Playoffs. Players going over the initial 50-game cap receive a veteran's minimum salary. However, as of April 2021, it is currently unknown if these alterations will be made permanent.
Nice! Thanks for the info! Might be what the Dr. ordered for Luka.

VERY weird to me that they only signed him to a two-way contract...and gave Livers 3 years guaranteed. Luka has looked incredible in these summer league games.

Though, I do wonder if this two-way contract is a way for Luka to get a big payday more quickly. If he's on a 2-way contract this year and balls out...he would be a free agent at the end of the year, correct? Then there could be multiple teams interested and that would drive his contract up.

Whereas if he just signed a standard 3 year rookie deal like Livers, he would be bound to that for the next 3 years.

Can’t claim to have any insight, but with both Olynyk and Okafor on the roster, it may be a scenario where they’re waiting for Okafor to come off the books (he’s a UFA after this year) to sign Garza. The Pistons would be stupid to let Luka fall through the cracks so my best guess is that they are waiting for some cap space to clear up to pay him

At least with the 2-way contract it allows him to be 1 of the 20 guaranteed players to begin practice for the Pistons in October. It's now up to Luka to make the pistons roster and elevate that contract to a full time NBA player. My money is on Luka.....

Tyler did but hasn't translated yet. His G League numbers were very good prior to the Pistons picking him up. He was making jumpers and facilitating....but then he played a different role with Detroit. I still think Tyler has a window but it is closing if he can't make a roster this year or next.

He has been a great lockerroom guy and hard worker. He's got several teams that are interested in G League deals

Garza had his third-straight double-double last night.

Luka Garza, Last Night:

27 minutes (of 40)

2-6 (33%) from 3 point range
6-10 (60%) from 2 point range
8-16 (50%) Overall Shooting
3-5 (60%) FTs

21 Points
15 Rebounds (4 offensive)
1 Assist

1 Steal

0 Blocks
3 Turnovers
5 Fouls
+6 Plus/Minus

This is a really nice game story from the Detroit Free Press.

Some excerpts:

Luka Garza showcases his potential

There aren't too many bigs in the NBA who can hit 3-pointers both off the dribble and off the catch, post-up and rebound effectively. But Garza, who was a four-year standout at Iowa, did all of that and more in Vegas.

He's every bit as good on offense as he was advertised, and got progressively better as the week went on. The Pistons started him on Friday as one of two replacements for Tyler Cook and Sekou Doumbouya, who went home early to attend to a family matter.

Garza, who showed flashes of what he could do through the first two games, immediately became an offensive spark plug for the Pistons. He makes life easier for everyone on offense, given that there's little he struggles to do on that end of the floor.

While his defense is still a question mark, it's tough to not see him getting NBA minutes next season if his Summer League performance translates to the regular season.

Other Fun Story: Luka Garza could be a cult hero if he sticks in the NBA. Just ask his dad

Not a bad 5 game Summer League for Garzilla.

3 double doubles and a very strong two game finish.

Luka will earn anywhere between $84,400 and $925,000

Looks like Jon has the old two-way contract info, at least according to the link below. They made changes to it last year because of COVID and carried over most of those changes.

Luka's contract will be worth half the rookie minimum and he will make around $460k in salary for the season while being eligible for up to 50 games with the Pistons. He can't be called up by any other team though like any normal G-League player could. So he's taking guaranteed money this year while giving up on another team potentially liking him and offering him a nice contract. He also won't be eligible for the playoffs unless he gets signed to a standard contract.

Good for him. It took me most of my first decade working out of college to make as much money as he'll make this upcoming season.

Cook has improved immensely, but still doesn't have a reliable 20' jumper. Every other part of Cooks game has improved.

@Stormn Norman ,

As you can see, Luka will make around $460,000

Had to add the, “as you can see” huh?!? Lol! Yeah, I see it now, thanks! I didn’t see the additional post covering the contract! That some good money. Luka will be able to take his folks out for dinner now! 😉

i don't know how long 2 way contracts have been around but they sure sound better than the standard G league contract

Pistons fans on Twitter are upset that he only got a two way contract lol

Fan favorite already, and can’t say I’m surprised
On that subject, has anyone else tried accessing their fan forum lately? I visited it a couple of games ago just to see what their reaction to Luka was and now when I try to access it, I get the 404 Not Found message.

it will be interesting to see where Tyler ends up. Hope he saved some of the money he's made over the last couple years
