Lunardi has us in....w/o Joe W

No excuse not to make it. Fran had access to the same players everyone else did in the portal and opted to bring in 1 guy--Rebraca. He believes Jbo negates loss of CJ and that he has all the other pieces necessary to make the tournament. I am giving up on deep March runs, so let's go with make the tournament as the bar for Fran.

It's pretty clear cut. Either Fran knows what he is doing and has the pieces to make the tournament OR he whiffed on a huge opportunity to add talent to the team via the portal. Despite the departures, Fran has a core group of guys returning who will been in the program 2 years. This is a luxury all the portal rebuild teams won't have.

I love conjecture and projections just the same as anyone. But, a bracket in May Lunardi?

There should be a pool, to see who can guess, how many more revised brackets Joe will produce before March 2022.
A NCAA prognosis in May is utter folly. But, now add the gazillion transfers and it is nonsense. Nobody has seen most of these teams nucleus (if they have one any longer) play together. JMO

Love that it has WI as 1st 4 out🙂

He has Iowa matched against USC. It would be a toughmatchup of length against length. Could be an instant classic with scores over 100.

Know it doesn't really matter concerning the projected matchup, but did both Mobleys' decide to stick around for the Trojans?

There is a lot of raw talent with this team. I’m excited to see who will emerge as the alpha dog this upcoming season. Joe T? Keegan? Filip? Maybe even a surprise emergence, such as JO or one of the Freshman.

I haven't been paying attention to Iowa basketball for a month or 2...is there any chance Joe W. is coming back?

Nope. He’s gone.
Yeah that’s the consensus, and based on what some posters here have said, that’s the belief amongst the coaches as well. For the benefit of @hawkeyekid though, it isn’t official yet, and Joe could still return

Actually found this article from a day ago on a Spurs fan site talking about him as a potential second round pick while I was doing some googling for an update - kind of an interesting read in that you can see where and why an NBA team might look to draft somebody with Joe’s skill set : https://projectspurs.com/2021/05/18/san-antonio-spurs-prospect-watch-joe-wieskamp/

I'm optimistic of another NCAA. The Hawks' starting five is pretty easy to predict and I think those are good players. Its hard to see Connor as a starter next season, given the change in the team, but the the bench seems to be decent. Jordan won't be guarding the other team's quickest player when we go man, and Patrick, Keegan and Joey T make a huge boost in defense. It sounds like our newest import plays well in a spaced post environment and can create that space with a decent face up shot that extends to the three line.

Just because they're new does not mean they're a bad team.

So, it's official. He's actually stated he won't be back! Why did the official university statement get deleted?
Actually, I really should get on the bandwagon with all the other negative Nancy's on this board.
I guess I really didn't look at what we have coming back or not coming back. Garza the national player of the year. Weezy almost a great player, Nunge who left to start anew, and Fredrick, a under 8 point a game scorer and who quit on this team late in the season.
Coming back, Bohannan who according to most on here can't play defense, Patrick who is still a question mark with his health and weight issues. Connor who as we all know is a better baseball player then a basketball player and both of these players are only on this team because of their dad.
Then you have Filip Rebraca who some have been critical of, because he was plucked from a mid major program.
We all know about Ulis, Perkins, Kris Murray, and Josh Ogundele. None played much last year which was probably indicative of Fran not thinking much of them.
Then we have Joe Toussaint who showed promise as a freshmen but took a step back last year and who knows what he will bring to the table this coming year.
Then there is the 2 freshmen in Payton Sanford and Riley Mulvey who probably won't be given much playing time by Fran so that the upper classmen can get into a groove, you know, don't went the veterans sitting on the bench behind wet nose freshmen.
That leaves Keegan Murray as the only bonified player coming back.
Looking at this roster it's amazing that BBHawk even had us winning 8 games in conference. Long season ahead of us, getting owned by Nebbie, Minny, and Wisconsin doesn't seem very appetizing....

Only announcement I see is he is going through the process while maintaining NCAA eligibility.

I can’t wait for the season.....this will be a completely different team that will be much more athletic than the last few years.

One of the many things I love about college basketball is watching players develop as they work in the weight room, learn from their experience, and gain confidence and a comfort level with the system and their environment.

More playing time typically adds fuel to that growth.....I hope and believe that we will see much better defense from this next version of our Hawks. I am confident that we will see offensive growth from players taking on new roles both as starters and off of the bench.

It’s most likely that this next year’s team won’t be nearly as good as last year’s.....but watching them progress through the season and hopefully seeing them peak at the right time should be interesting.

I wish we still had the PTL!

I have no idea how we are setting with him but we were involved and Onu is still available and if we get him we are a really good team. Probably better than last year. Why are we assuming our roster is finished?

I wouldn't position it quite this way. Yes, Iowa has the same opportunity - theoretically -- as everyone else. But it's not as simple as just saying "I want these 3 guys" from the portal and boom they are on your team.

You have to offer opportunity to play and/or the perception that your program is a step up from where the player is transferring from.

At this point, I'm not even sure I would venture a guess as to our effectiveness as a basketball team next year. We hear over and over how the college game is a guard's game. When I look at our guards I see Joe T, who not only didn't take the step forward we expected, but actually regressed. Then we have Ulis and Perkins, who combined for 13 minutes a game last year with neither of them displaying the ability to consistently score at this level. Not to say they can't, they're just an unknown. Then we have JBo, who is the most polarizing player in memory with just as many regretting his return as applauding it. You throw in Connor, another favorite whipping boy, and our guard situation could be best labelled suspect.

Agreed. This team really needs that big guard (~6'5") who is a scorer. Perkins could be close to that guy as he has the strength and the hops to make up for the difference in height, but it's just not a given that he has the ability to hit the jumper. I am hoping he really comes on next year.

Not only "not a given" Tony's shot looks terrible. Of course, it only matters that it drops but terrible form usually means a terrible shooter, e.g. Conner McC.

I don't disagree but Fran not being more active in the portal must mean he is good with who he has. I am fine with that, but then he gives up the 'we lack experience' card. My broader point is that yes Iowa lost some major contributors, but so has everyone else. Fran and his staff are in place as is a pretty solid core of returning guys, which others do not have.
