Taking his crazy to where he's relatively not so crazy...

You know I look at his wikipedia page and I'm trying to figure out if he in any way ever earned money on his own as an adult to be able to afford such a house.

Says he worked at Chik-Fil-A as a teen. Was not granted entrance the Naval Academy, went to college got D grades, worked part time for Mark Meadows, started a real estate investment company but that company has only done 1 real estate transaction.

Then he's in congress.

Where did this dude get all his money?

The only thing I can think of is the settlement from the accident that paralyzed him.

I figured he wasn't going to just walk away from politics

Always. Be. Grifting.

Stacy Abrams' net worth went from $108k in 2018 to $3.2M in 2020.

I will say it again, one underrated aspect of the shittiness of our politics is that, thanks to social media and the ease of collecting money electronically and the need to fill a 24 hour news cycle, you no longer have to win to grift.

Grifting has always been part of politics. But at least you used to have to win office to REALLY get your grift on - steer government contracts to cronies, take kickbacks for killing regulations, take bribes from companies for friendly legislation...all that good traditional all-American thievery. Ultimately, your ability to really cash in like a real scumbag required you to be electable.

The fact that's changed has been a disaster. It's been weaponized by everyone in the Trump orbit, but is also fully embraced by grifters on the left like Abrams and the Lincoln Project.

Losers like Cawthorn, Abrams, and Trump have much more to gain by losing in the most divisive, unproductive and extreme way possible than they do by being rational and pragmatic and, you know...actually winning.

I don't even know what you do about that. It's just pours a massive amount of poison into the political arena.

At least in the new form of grifting, the money comes from donations born out of the donator's free will. In some cases, perhaps there's legitimate fraud like Bannon's wall fund, while many are likely still pleased with their donations to the cause. As opposed to the old form where public money/influence is being used for private gain.

I agree that there's not an apparent solution. One man's poison is another man's duty to save America. Which is the the real frustration, what reasonable people might identify as vile, others view the same thing as courageous.

I find it interesting some of y’all are asking where he got his money from. Once you’re elected to the house it’s nothing but graft from there on out. For everyone regardless of the letter behind their name.
But I’m not familiar with this guy because I have separated myself from politics. Life is so much better.

Amen, my lawyer friend in Denver sent me some data on how much money is in politics since Citizens United decision. My jaw about fell off.

I mean, it does, and it doesn't. Trump's PAC solicited under the guise of raising money to take back the Senate, which he instead used overwhelmingly on his other interests. Stacy Abrams' foundation donors were I'm sure not expecting their money was going to be funneled primarily to excessive legal bills paid directly to her best friend and campaign manager.

I mean, caveat emptor and all that...if you're not assuming you're being grifted, you should be.

But even in the case where lunatics are freely and willingly paypalling Roger Stone $20 for replica Trump bathwater or whatever...the phenomenon sucks. And anyway in old style grift, lobbyists bribing officials are equally aware of where their money is going and are giving it of their own free will.

A guy like Cawthorne serving two meaningless years in Congress and making millions...that's a way worse phenomenon ultimately than the old Pelosi (and everyone else) get-rich-slowly grift. At least that had the fringe benefit of requiring some kind of practical contribution to functioning government.

That’s not a tough call. You simply leave it blank.
But if you HAD to pick one?

I’d vote cage match.

Gaetz would be over confident. He’d knock Madison out of his wheel chair. Go full douche and toy with him. (He’d probably get aroused…so would Madison)

It’d be a really interesting match.

After some real off putting guy on guy action. Gaetz gets down to business. Smacks Madison around, a couple atomic drops or some such. Leaves Madison in the center of the ring.

Gaetz climbs to the top rope. Gonna go all Ricky Steamboat on Madison but misjudges his “sunset flip” because he’s an unathletic dweeb and knock’s himself unconscious and breaks his neck by landing headfirst into the squared circle.

All Madison has to do is crawl over to Gaetz and cover him for the 3 count and the District is his….

But….Madison can’t help himself and some more male on male action ensues.,.

On second thought I ain’t voting “cage match”

You put a lot of thought in to that reply...maybe a little too much. NTTAWWT

Well thought out.

I agree with the spirt of the whole post, just wanted to clarify what I had meant.

In the traditional grift, I wasn't concerned about the lobbyist and their free will to "donate" money as being victims. In that scenario, "we", the public, the taxpayers are "harmed" if politicians misappropriate public money to the lobbyist's interest to return the favor.

The new age grift doesn't have that public money component. Some passionate fan may have donated money to Stacy Abrams to save Georgia from tyranny but instead the money went to Abrams's buddy. There's not really a public victim. Maybe the passionate fan, although almost certainly not a victim a legal sense.

LOL if you want to lump Abrams in with Cawthorn and Trump. Dislike her all you want for her politics, but she's actually done a few things in her life born of her own efforts.

Yeah, aside from the need to bOtH sIdEs his response I have no idea why he chose Abrams. She's been busy working her whole life and is successful on many fronts. Just sold the rights to one of her novels to Universal. How anyone would compare that to Cawthorn is beyond me.
