Major step back tonight

It really wasn't. This loss, honestly, in the grand scheme of things, really doesn't matter. Northwestern is a pretty good team.

Yeah, but the lack of energy on the road is disconcerting. Granted, it's expected to some extent and NW was crazy hot, but Iowa's D was ATROCIOUS! Yo-yo year. Next game Iowa could be lights out. It's the road games that have me most concerned, but that's to be expected. Joe playing like shit was a surprise, though. No answer for Macintosh at all.

It's a year of erratic play.
I'm going to have fun watching the games that are competitive, and turn off the others. Like tonight.
No use getting too worked up over it.

Yup. Just calling it was it was. Loved the previous three games, but this was pathetic. Next game, probably a feisty group of Hawkeyes! :)

We will learn LOTS from this game. Tons of errors, and ton of exposure. If we are going to lose, we might as well as lose like this with our young team...

The tape from tonight will be quite valuable. I do not think there is a player on the team that will not learn from it. They will be reviewing from about 30 minutes from now until late tonight. Then again tomorrow. Then the real-time physical learning will begin tomorrow afternoon.

It will be a valuable lesson. NW exposed every angle, we will learn a Sh!t ton before the plane even lands in Iowa City.

Moving forward people...

Just flipped over to the Chiefs game with about 10 min left. Not something to get upset about.

Very young team coming off a huge win on the road against an underrated opponent.

Could have seen this one coming. Tomorrow is a new day. Hope the team gets home safe.

How is a 20 point loss a worse loss than a 35 point loss?

Chins up Hawks. At least you aren't Rutgers.

I'm assuming it means it's their worst margin of defeat to NW since that 20 point loss because it was cited on the BTN broadcast.

Iowa at Northwestern was a trap game. The Hawks
were sky-high after beating the #17 ranked Purdue
Boilermakers. They had to go on the road and play
in a high school gym at Northwestern. Jok was playing
injured as was Pemsl, and Uhl was out with a bad thumb.

Bottom Line: The defensive intensity was lacking for the
Hawkeyes and hopefully there were no more injuries for
Iowa. How many passes did we throw away and then
Northwestern converted them into a transition play and
two points?

That was the most half-hearted attempts I've seen from Peter in a while. You could tell right away that he wasn't locked in on either side really and that hurts. I was hoping he would build off his performance distributing the ball against Purdue in this game. Hopefully he starts feeling better and can bounce back.

I hope we are not so easily discouraged from attacking the rim when we play against shot blockers in the future.

We were outran and outhustled by NW which is disappointing coming off a Purdue game in which we showed a lot of guts.

We never made things difficult for them on defense. Too many runouts/2nd chance points. McIntosh was allowed to get to comfortable against Jordan/Christian early on, built his confidence, and then just made play after play. Similar results will be seen Thursday if we let Melo get going.

We can blame it on youth but where were the upper classmen?

Our only two, Jok & Uhl, were injured. Minor injuries as far as I know. But that's all we got for upper classmen... Crazy thought, how young we really are ...

Hope Uhl & Jok's injuries are not too significant to effect their play come Thursday.

Moving forward. Teach. Learn. Advance.

Whats the old saying "take two steps forward and 3 steps back" or something like that?

We took a step forward vs Purdue, but 3 major steps back last night. Fran has to right the ship vs Maryland. Get them to bring the intensity and effort back.

As Fran said, the young guys tend to feed off Jok's lead. He wasn't feeling well, couldn't carry that load, and the youth folded on the road. Uhl being out didn't help this equation. It's one of those learning games most experienced fans have warned about for months. If Jok is better by Thursday, expect a good showing vs MD at home. One positive to take away is that the next time Jok is no show, the young guys will be a little more prepared.

The effort was poor, and that's bad, but its not like losing 78-72 would have been a huge moment for us. Its a road loss to a decent team, lets move on. Really good team coming into Carver Thursday, and the score starts at 0-0 no matter what happened in Evanston. Needs to be a better effort though to have a chance.

I did the exact same thing. I watched the end of the Packers game and DVR'd the Hawks. I used the FF button through the first half and when I saw they weren't going to even compete, I shut it off and watched a fairly boring Steelers/Chiefs game. I'm not going to get all lathered up about inconsistency from a very young team. Over the next 3 years, I will invest more emotion into it. Not this year.

Jok only scoring 4 pts will crater any NBA aspirations he has. He has to do a lot better all of the time or don't play him. At least Fran has now seen Kreiner is a player and the loss of Uhl was no biggie. Imo, Fran needs to open a couple more schollys for next season and get some back court help. The hawks are just too thin in the back court with limited talent as back ups.

I don't think 1 really bad game or 1 really good game will have a dramatic impact on his NBA chances.

What is a little troubling is we saw a similar lack of effort at Purdue a couple weeks ago and then basically did same or less last night. Everyone is projecting this season as learning and building year with more youth coming. You would think that these young guys would be more hungry as playing time will be even more at premium next year. This is back to back Sunday games too where effort was pretty weak after a tough midweek game, could be an issue with practice regimen and with the freshman wall, this could get worse before it gets better.

I think PJs limited ball handling skills and generally sub par defense overall are what will likely keep him from making an NBA roster more so than one bad scoring night.
