Majority of traffic cameras nixed by Iowa DOT under new law

The DOT on Monday approved only 11 fixed automated traffic enforcement cameras across the state while denying requests for 128 others

I'm a fan of traffic camera's for intersections.

Lots of folks running red lights in Florida...would like to see that cut down.

Works in Europe...
Same here. It works because it makes the intersection safer. And people who have to pay the tickets don't have it to count against their insurance. And they get to their precious commute maybe 2 minutes later.

Enforcement is almost non-existent down here. I have only anecdotal evidence...but I see a lot of accidents at intersections down here. Speeding through an intersection as the light turns red is a common occurance....

Iowa is a dystopian police state nightmare with their outrageous 55-65mph nonsense and speed cameras. People drive like absolute morons with nowhere to be and nothing to do. Concept of a zipper merge is considered rude. I honestly couldn’t live there without a Chauffeur.

I do not like fixed speed cameras at alll. I think they coach behavior in certain isolated spots. Red light cameras serve a useful specific purpose. I think every stop light should have a camera.

When your wife is in labor and you’re doing 85 in a 55 with no cars on the road, it is justice that the state gets a cut of your lawlessness.

This^^^.
Plus, apparently cars sold in this state don't have turn signals.

Oh for crap's sake...like there's tens of thousands of occasions this happens every goddam day through a given camera zone.

Sorry it inconvenienced that once every 6 months motorist...

There's speeding and then there's downright reckless. I would be in favor of fixed speed cameras to curb reckless driving. There are stretches of I90 near me where cars and motorcycles doing 100+ is not uncommon and fatal wrecks are all too frequent. Cameras with stiff fines and/or suspensions would go a long ways towards curbing that and saving lives.

Initially when they installed traffic cameras in the St. Louis area, I was happy hoping they would make intersections safer. However, it became a joke in short order when cameras were installed in lightly traveled areas and yellow caution lights were shorted to catch more people driving through intersections. There is a lightly traveled intersection near my home that has a yellow flashing light between midnight and 7am but after a traffic camera was installed, the light worked 24/7 even when no one was in the area. It was nothing more than a way to catch anyone just to raise money. Funny, now that the camera is gone, it has gone back to flashing yellow between 12am-7am. I'm sure that is just a coincidence.

I am fine with stop light cameras.

Speed cameras are bullshit and seem to be set up close to where the speed drops.

Asshole cities like Nevada drop the speed limit on highway 30 for absolutely no reason as a revenue stream.

I see they wanted to add more camera's on the S curve in CR but that was denied. Also, Postville Iowa installed camera's on the west and north side of town, but they were denied a permit. I'm not sure if they ever worked or were in operation but they had the desired effect.

Clermont, Iowa has signage indicating camera enforcement, but we've never seen a camera so maybe they applied and were denied?

The red light cameras are manipulated to shorten yellow lights below what is actually safe in order to generate revenue. They also issue citations in many places for turning right on red or turning left after a light change even when the driver was already in the intersection. Speed cameras have zero to do with safety and everything to do with revenue generation.

I absolutely detest civil procedure to step around a governments burden for criminal behavior.

Drivers should comply to posted speed limits and obey traffic signals. Not sure why you went soft on crime.
