so, I saw on the front page on Friday that Malik has scheduled an official visit here... and not a single mention in this forum?? am I missing something, isn't this a big deal, or does everyone just assume he's Louisville or MSU bound?

I still have hope that ends up in black and gold and getting him on campus with one of his officials has to be a positive. Maybe the new scoreboard will impress him:rolleyes:

Having had Malik here back in January to watch Iowa beat Purdue helps. To get an official after he's already been here is great.

Michigan State is said to lead, with Louisville fighting hard to get him (Which means Garza's leader Louisville would probably quit stringing Garza along.)

The thing about Mich St? They are also pursuing 7'0" 244lb Brandon McCoy, 6'10" 230 Jaren Jackson Jr and 6'8" 232 P J Washington. And, don't those guys sound more like Michigan State type bigs?

Contrary to posters who corrected me in a previous thread. Yes, we do have a legit shot at Williams. Why would he come back for an official if he isn't at least still considering us?

The official is definitely a good sign. Recruits only get 5 correct? So I'd think that means we're up there at least. No one really knows what his relationship is with Fran or the assistants. I'll be the first to admit I was way off on Cook. I still think Williams goes elsewhere, but a lot of that may depend on how fast other schools fill up their classes. Sounds like Williams wants to take his time and might be a late signer, which I think is actually a good sign for Iowa.

Googled and supposedly on the weekend of ISU football game (Sept 10). I was also wondering why nobody was talking about upcoming visit on this board??

Well...Williams already knows that McC would let him play the way he wants to, i.e., inside and outside. He also knows that Iowa has bruisers in Cook, Kreiner and Pemsl, so he would not have to be the heavy inside even though he could float around and block shots from the backside, etc, like Aaron White and Jarrod Uthoff. He also knows that he would have the green light to shoot from the outside. Would he have that much freedom elsewhere? I think Iowa is a very viable landing spot for him because of these things.

I would call it the Ullis factor. I think a lot of Hawkeye fans had really high hopes that he was Iowa bound, then after Kentucky swooped in at the last minute I think many got tired of getting their hopes up that big-time prospects would choose Iowa over the traditional bluebloods. I'm guessing that's why there is little to no conversation about it. Or, since it is now August, a lot of people's attention is on the football board. Who knows.

I will say that Hawk fans should continue to trust in Fran, as he has proven to be not only a tireless recruiter but a coach with a good eye for talent who gets in on the process early. Tyler Cook's commitment will in time prove to be a huge get. No one can ever say for sure, but from what I've seen and read of Cook, I think he has a great chance of being considered one of the all-time greats at Iowa after his career is all said and done. I really think even though he was a top 100 recruit that he still flew a little under the radar because of how good his high school team was. I don't like to put too high of expectations on kids, but I just get this feeling that Cook is a player a lot of bluebloods are going to regret overlooking a bit.

Regardless, back to the original point, I do think Fran's efforts are going to continue to pay off and it wouldn't surprise me if a player like Malik Williams committed. If not him, others down the road. This is a good time to be a Hawkeye fan. I have every hope that Coach Fran will in time have the same impact on the Iowa basketball program that Lute Olsen did. I just hope he doesn't leave like Lute did.

Good point. I think it is clear that Fran McCaffery promised Adam Woodbury that he would start from day 1 and I could see Fran making a similar promise to Williams, that he would get to play the way he wants to play from the outside/in. Izzo can not make that promise and I'm not sure Pitino can either, at least not realistically.

Fran is in such a good position the next two years with recruiting. He can really zero in and find the right player whether it is this year or next.

If a guy takes one of his officials, you have a shot. Kudos to Fran for getting him on campus. A tandem of Williams and Cook up front in 2017-18 would be very nice, thank you very much.

I love to hear the positive thoughts! I also see that Garza has just named iowa in his top 4. I'd be happier than a puppy with two peters if either of the two gave us their commitment. Fran must be doing something right to keep their interest at this late stage in the game and he's proven he can pull it off with Cook. #cantwaitforbbseason

Allow me to play devils advocate and suggest we are not in an ideal position for recruiting the next two years. Ideally, Fran and Iowa would have more than one available scholarship for the next two classes and as a result we might miss out on a player or two that would otherwise want to attend Iowa and offer superior skills and ability compared to a couple player currently on scholarship. There are already reports surfacing that Connor is exploring options such as walking on, going the prep school route, etc.

This is the downside to unbalanced class sizes and the current composition of the roster. Certainly there couple be a couple transfers that would eliminate some of the issues that exist with the lack of available scholarships, but that isn't a certainty. We'll just have to see what happens, but Fran had done a great job in his rebuild and it could be argued Iowa has never been more attractive to top 100 recruits in the past decade as they are right now, so not an ideal time to be so limited with available scholarships. Just my .02

You could also say the reverse. Limited scholarships should mean your roster will be full of players with experience.

Ae you referring to reports generated by the media or speculation posted by casual fans? If it is the former, do you have a source or link? I could of missed it. Interesting if true.

Reported by Tom this morning, there's an article out there.

Agreed the roster is full, but the flip side is we are potentially forced to turn away players willing to attend Iowa that are higher ranked and /or skilled than some of the players we currently have on the roster.

I suppose overall it's a good problem to have, that being Fran has elevated this program considerably and more and more top 100 type recruits are giving Iowa a serious look. To me, it's bad timing though when we have momentum, three straight ncaa appearances, seem to be in on several top players but don't have much room if any available in the next two recruiting classes.

On the flip side, we do have 4-star players coming in each of the next 3 years with the possibility of getting another this year and more in 2 years (in Patrick's class).

Are there any memes out there with Pitino and hookers/blow? If not, someone needs to do it.

His becoming a Hawkeye was always a long shot. Time to move on.

Yep...extremely long shot, but encouraging to think we see high major kids each year that mention Iowa, take visits and consider the Hawks, Fran continues to fight, but thankfully he has plan B, C and D ready to act on.

I still think that kid Nunge from Indiana is the one I really hope the Hawks get. He flashes incredible skills for his size and has the shot to really be dangerous, something about his tape that tells me a lot of high majors are going to be disappointed they passed.

In watching their videos, there is a lot of upside with Garza and Nunge.

For those who are really high on Garza, this should help us with him quite a bit
