Since he nearly broke the Internet with the longest thread in Wrestling Message Board history, I think it is only fair to keep him on the 1st page for as long as HR is alive and kicking.

I was thinking of starting it off by calculating the Over/Under for his current weight. I am starting it off at 175. For those of you that know Willie this should be an easy bet for you as he was our resident "all things Grothus" guy!

What say you all? Is he over or under?

light hearted topic...i get that...but a lesson in all this too.

Many had Grothus penciled in as AA, even high AA upon his return. Then reality happened. No criticism of Grothus, he clearly had the heart of a lion.

But Iowa cannot depend on miracles and wishful thinking, while PSU recruits top 10 elite guys, year after year. Iowa needs to be seeking out and developing the very best recruits. The last two years show that Iowa is headed in the right direction. Still, some help at 141 and 197 is needed, imho.

Hindsight shows Brody got a tough break at Big Tens. Thorn losing in the first round was a big blow. Thorn looked like a sub .500 wrestler in his first match with zero gas tank. He came back the next day looking tough against Brody. I think the drugs played a roll in his night and day performances.

I agree 100% with your final paragraph. I would add a caveat to your previous paragraph to say that those of us who had Grothus penciled in as AA did so with full awareness that a guy with a 1-2 career NCAA record, recovering from a year-long injury, was hardly a shoo-in to AA. But a high AA from him was the only viable hope we had of winning NCAAs; unlike Carton, he at least offered a plausible path.

The sad reality was that a high AA from him would only have put us in the top 3. Which is why I agree 100% with your final paragraph, and why I've been banging that same drum. Those who were betting on Grothus weren't delusional--just desperate due to a flawed recruiting strategy that cost us multiple titles over the past 6 years. Since corrected, it appears.

So happy to have this Grothus thread back. :)

Grothus made real effort and sacrifice to help the team. That kind of cut under his circumstances was along shot at best. He was a great wrestler who did not get the breaks from the fates. He is a great kid and did what he was able. I believe at 100% he would have achieved much. I don't know his plans but he is a hawk. I wish him the best.

I wish someone like FLO would have documented Grothus for that last season just to show most that truly don't realize how hard what he did was. Cutting weight sucks. I don't care if you have new age nutritionists, scheduled regimens, etc. When you are in the 18-22 range micromanaging your caloric intake, work-outs and schooling is nearly impossible for most. And that doesn't even account for the fact that he didn't appear to have the body type that allows for peeling an extra 8lbs off your body.

I came on here and admittedly pushed to downplay expectations based on what Grothus had shown to date. However, that doesn't mean I didn't want him to meet or even exceed those expectations. I have the deepest respect for what he went through to try to help the team and that is why I liked that someone who didn't attain his goals received as much or more attention on here as many Hawkeye NCAA and even Olympic Champs have.

Much Respect Mr. Grothus!

Oh, and by the way, I think he weighed in at exactly 175 when I started this topic. Willie???

Beat on that dead horse some more!

Showing someone respect is beating a dead horse? I actually like having you around so it can remind me how easily people misinterpret while continuously being grumpy!

It's only a good story if he wins. Cutting that much weight and wrestling badly is warning, not a good story. Time to move on to wrestling.

Grumpy? Nah, not at all.. Its just hard for me to get excited about threads where a Michigan State fan reminds us about Grothus and his weight issues or UNC Ramos and his "bad blood" with Iowa. Or trying to find dirt on why Tom is the USA coach and not Terry. Go start some threads on the MSU fan site. Maybe those threads will go in the direction you desire.

Every single thing you said is a complete misrepresentation of what I said.

1.)Because I wrestled at MSU 20 years ago does not make me solely a MSU fan. I am a fan of DI wrestling and have explained in detail why I am an Iowa fan.
2.)I am not reminding you about Grothus weight issues. I am reminding you about how hard he tried and the sacrifices he made to try to HELP the program.
3.)I never endorsed Ramos and any bad blood. I don't care what program you are at Coaches and wrestlers aren't always going to get along. I don't think what happened is a black spot on any part of the Iowa program.
4.)I wasn't looking for dirt one bit in regards to Tom or Terry. Dirt implies I was trying to find something negative. I was simply curious and respect Terry for being so transparent(meaning what you see is exactly what you get) that I wondered why it wasn't him and figured their had to be a honorable reason because he strikes me as one of the most honorable guys I have ever seen.

5.)Finally, is there a MSU fan site? :D:D:D:D:D These Green and White emoticons represent a number higher than the amount of posters I know of that post at any MSU fan site.....................

You are being intellectually disengenuos with your response. It has been pointed out that the way you phrase your 'questions' are leading. You holding up your hands and saying 'who me?' Is entertaining. You are smart, in spite of your MSU education and know what you are doing. See how I pulled an MSU here, my defense would be 'I said you are smart how is that a slam on Michigan State? I am innocent of this.'

It has been pointed out that they have been "interpreted" as leading. There is a big difference. I explained what I meant everytime that interpretation has been made. That of course is ignored. Like I have said before, I think the fact that my handle is MSU158 makes many on here immediately believe I am leading towards negativity. If it were Iowa 158, I honestly believe I would get considerably different responses.

I am a big fan of Iowa and especially Metcalf and the Brands brothers. My posts are created to try to create a good discussion, but I will swear upon anything that my intent is NEVER negative towards Iowa in anyway. If you choose to believe otherwise that is your prerogative.

Maybe you just have bad timing/taste in subject matter. Kinda like the first person to start clapping when your not supposed to at a large gathering.

I disagree that your handle causes the issue. I have read quite a bit of your stuff and I know that you have a great deal of respect for the Iowa program. If you feel your threads aren't leading or can't see how the majority of people could interpret them to lead towards a negative connotation or that they stir the pot than I may need to reassess my evaluation of your intelligence level. Currently you are playing word games and semantics, it was fun for a bit but now it is a little tiresome due to your lack of variety. FYI my opinion wouldn't change if your handle was "GableisGod" or "InBrandswetrust". But carry on with your leading threads/questions and hold your hands up like Eddie Haskell and asking 'Who me?'

cidhawkeye,

Thanks for the constructive criticism. I will aspire to proofread my threads to better ensure they are not "leading", while also making sure I diversify my topics to maintain your interest. Posters like you are why I post. I will endeavor to win you over with monumental, ground-breaking posts. You have inspired me to reach higher and I will use your assessment as a daily reminder to do so.

What I have to say just might get me tossed from the Hawkeye Report but, "Blow it out your pathetic irritating ass, MSU158". You just like to irritate posters by running off your mouth. Go pedal your crap somewhere else.

Take it whichever way you like, your sarcasm is brilliant in it's subtlety and darn near impossible to recognize. A great effort on your part and a refreshing change from your attempts to stir the pot and discredit the Iowa wrestling program. Nice progress from you.

In no way do you deserve to be removed from here for what you said. You are entitled to your opinion. Just like the great G. W. Bush, being a pioneer will create your fair share of hatred. I will continue to refine my approach while trying to ignite nothing but the best conversations. Hopefully 1 or 2 of them will be both worthy of your attention, and more importantly, bring a smile to that surly face!

If not, I have strong shoulders. Feel free to direct any and all of your anger, ill will or general negative feeling in my direction. I want you happy one day and will try to do my best to help how I can!

I'm very happy. Thanks for letting me know that I have an opinion. Obviously you don't listen or understand very well. I don't care for you so, blow it out your ass. I'll hit the ignore because that's what I do when it comes to chumps like you. You and your brother eveflores are the only two I ignore.:D

Most former wrestlers would have a pretty good idea of what natural 149 lb guys walk around at.

Lotso accidental out of bounds. I bet if you go back and watch the tapes, MSU158 was a guy who liked to wrestle from neutral with one foot riding the edge of the mat.

Not sure how you tried to segway that from guessing what someone weighs, but actually I was a plodder at the DI level. I stayed pretty well rooted to the center of the mat. Contrary to what many want to believe, the guy that wrestles the edge is often the one who takes the most shots. I mainly worked off ties and handfighting. But, if the other way fits the narrative better feel free to use it!
