I think the coaches threw him out there for a failed play to save face while their starter sucked. They told him not to throw the ball at all costs. Then he ran around and lost yards. This made the coaches think the fans thought they tried.

SIAP, was TJ open on this play? Looked that way from TV but Idk of defender was within closing distance
I like how they break things down and make it even more evident that at least a few of the officials in that game should be reprimanded for their efforts.I really hate to bash other posters,. but I will make an exception here. Here is an actual informed analysis of the play.

If you think this coaching staff would throw a player to the wolves to save face with the fans, then you haven't been paying attention the last 20 years.
You're probably one of those fans that want the coaches to be aggressive, but never make a mistake. Play to WIN! Don't play to NOT LOSE!
But, for Godsake! Don't make a mistake!

The point that too many people are missing is that there are times to be aggressive and there are times to be smart. Coaches need to be both. At the end of the first half it was insane to try that play FROM MIDFIELD where, if it didn't work, PSU would have time to get into FG range, WHICH THEY DID.
So be aggressive as hell, absolutely, but be smart too. And trying that play at that time from that field position was aggressive but dumb, and there's no logical way to spin it otherwise.
You punt there and take your 3-point lead to the locker room and come out and build on it in the second half. Simple as that.
You are absolutely right! You know you and I could be friends...I really hate to bash other posters,. but I will make an exception here. Here is an actual informed analysis of the play.

Wide open. Had a deep safety between he and the endzone
