“Liberal Paradise” Up in Flames

Baltimore Sun columnist Thomas Schaller, a political science professor at the University of Maryland-Baltimore County, cheerfully heralded the state of Maryland as a “liberal paradise”in 2013. Maryland is indeed by far the most left-wing state in America, a veritable showcase of the “liberal” welfare state. It has huge populations of both government employees and welfare parasites; one of the most generous welfare systems of any state; its “public” schools have long been destroyed by belligerent teachers’ unions; is a very high-tax state; routinely wages political war on whatever is left of real capitalism — its politicians proudly boast that the regulation of business is more onerous than any other state, and usually exceeds even federal regulatory dictates; and coddles criminals, endlessly repeating the “liberal” mantra that criminals are not responsible for the crimes they commit, “society” is. And of course the “war on drugs” rages in inner-city Baltimore as much as anywhere, complete with ever-increasing police brutality with an increasingly militarized and federalized police force.
As in many other cities, in Baltimore the black family has been all-but-destroyed by the welfare state (See Losing Ground by Charles Murray for an explanation of how welfare eliminated the stigma that was once attached to abandoning one’s children). The Baltimore Sun reports that, for decades, at least 80% of all black children are born without a father being a part of their life, with white families catching up rapidly. This has created several Lord-of-the-Flies generations. The rotten “public” schools in Baltimore city have destroyed the employment opportunities of tens of thousands of these children, while the war on drugs, which has caused skyrocketing drug prices and profits, lures them into lives of crime (and death by crime). All of this is a recipe for the mindless destruction of small businesses that was on display in yesterday’s riots and looting. With Al Sharpton reportedly headed to Baltimore, things are bound to get worse before they get better. No sane business person would ever invest in these neighborhoods. Once this is realized in a few years, the absence of drug stores, grocery stores, etc. will of course be blamed on the racism of white capitalists. “Paradise” will at last have been realized.

I suppose you would have to e-mail the author. I can surmise that he was implying that it was liberal public policy that administers the lead and they do nada. But, there there to help the people.
Are there leadmobiles that tour larger inner cities? The things I miss growing up in Iowa.
Be careful of the sources you quote, Nat. Maryland's schools were the best in the nation in 2013 according to this article - and had been for 5 straight years.

The conditions deserve attention and should be addressed. But the implication that eliminating the minimum wage and welfare support programs would fix those conditions is just as ludicrous as the idea that if only teen mothers would marry their deadbeat baby-daddies, the nuclear family and all of society would thrive.
It's nice to see cons and libertarians looking at actual problems for a change. Now if we can just get them to aim some actual thinking at them, we might get somewhere.

Most decent-sized cities have lead abatement programs. It's a pretty serious problem:
The city of Davenport has received a $2.5 million federal grant that will be used to make about 200 homes/housing units in the city and surrounding areas lead-safe, especially for children.
To qualify for lead help, one’s property must have been built before 1978, be inhabited by a low- or moderate-income family and have a child younger than 6 years either living in or regularly visiting the property. Homes with expectant mothers also qualify.
The reason for the child requirement is that lead is especially hazardous to young people, and the prevalence of lead poisoning among children younger than 6 years is four times higher in Iowa than the national average. Although lead poisoning causes significant health issues, most lead-poisoned children demonstrate no visible symptoms.

Now this is ludicrous. Libraries are filled with libertarian solutions. Because you turn a blind eye doesn't make it less visible. Dismantling minimum wage laws are part of the solution. They are unemployment bills since it becomes a crime to employ someone at 1 cent less than allowed by law...even though 2 parties had come to a mutual agreement.

Riots, Empire and the War on Drugs

Riots in Baltimore in April, and it isn’t even riot weather yet. Why?
The immediate cause is the brutal callousness of policemen in the American police state. Whatever has contributed to that police state mentality and activity provides the deeper reasons why the festering repression is breaking out into open hostilities and riot.
Pure racism based on skin color alone is not the direct cause of this rioting. Race is definitely involved but indirectly. Two important causes are at work. First, national policies of empire and war have afflicted poorer Americans more than the wealthier, and racial enclaves are poorer. Second, the war on drugs is a war on black people based upon the fears of the dominant white culture. These fears translate into votes for strong anti-drug measures. Pure racism based on color is not the basic variable in this war on black people. Therefore, blaming racism and looking for solutions to racism using standard liberal pap and remedies will not work.
National policies of empire and war have caused these riots through a variety of paths and channels. The militarized economy is not a healthy economy. Guns can’t be eaten. They don’t provide shelter or warmth. Excessive auto and home loans sooner or later run smack into low incomes that cannot cover the payments. Higher minimum wages throw disadvantaged workers out of work. National policies that distribute military weapons and gear to cops while training them to look upon Americans as unruly enemies create a police state.
Policemen in ghettos find it easier to find minor infractions and beat up on poorer people unorganized to resist. Enforcement of the war on drugs is far more stringent against blacks than whites, and that is due not only to the relative lack of power and organization in the ghettos but also because this enforcement is what whites have wanted and what has been reflected in the politics and laws.
Here is what an undercover narc has said about the greater police repression of drugs in the black than the white population:
“It was only later that I realized that the reason they were sending me into that place was because it was a black club and they wanted the black clubs shut down.”
[Interviewer] “So it was racially motivated?
“In most cases I don’t think it was. It’s just easier to bust those guys. You give me a squad of narcs and drug dogs, and we’ll go to some affluent white community. I can walk down the streets sniffing cars, do some knock-and-talks, and I assure you we’ll come across some marijuana parties. I guarantee I can come out of there with some drug arrests. But after the first day, after the mayor’s phone rings off the hook—that’s the end of that operation.”
In the same interview, this man explains how the war on drugs increased the violence in the communities and how this violence then caused many productive people to flee the neighborhoods. The drug trade that had been controlled by organizations that kept the peace altered when these organizations were attacked and dismantled. Gangs and turf wars proliferated. All of this has weakened the black communities, weakened their economies and weakened the job opportunities. The ground for rioting has been fertilized by the war on drugs.
