Hopefully he can hang on at least 2-3 years and bank some $$. After that there is always Europe. Not a bad gig if he is smart with his money.

Yeah If I'm him Im saving every penny then as soon as im cut from the NBA im off to europe for 3-5 years to make a little more then its a nice cushy corporate job where I only work 20-30 hrs a week and then early retirement at the age of 40.

Butttt what often happens with the majority of these guys is they blow through the money before they are even out of the NBA try to make some in Europe crash out file for bankruptcy before the IRS/Banks take their home and then become a burden on the American people.

Why not a 10 year career overseas (if he is cut from the NBA) and a nice cushy retirement? Guy like him could bank 500k, or more, a year over there and its 100% tax free, living is paid for, and you get a car provided. That's a hell of a lot better than a 9-5 for 15 years.

A lot of ex ball players talk about getting worn out quickly playing in europe. Many of them struggle with the culture and not knowing the languages. In a lot of circles it isnt easy playing on a team where half of your team communicates in a different language while you are standing right by them.

I spent time working in Europe. I had a couple of american friends that played pro sports in the country I was living in. One scocer and one basketball. Lets just say a lot of european players want to keep the leagues very much european. There is a bit of a cold shoulder to outsiders in pro sports over there. Easy thing would be to say well just learn the languages but many of the american players just dont put the time or energy into doing that. My firend that played pro soccer lived and played in germany for 5 years and only knew a little german.

Not saying your wrong, but my family is good friends with Greg Brunners dad and he talks about how much Greg loved his time spent overseas, and made a very very nice living in doing so. Cole is another former hawk who has talked about enjoying it over there as well. It most certainly isn't for everyone, and I would imagine being on the right team and in the right environment helps, however getting to play a game you love for hundreds of thousands of dollars is a heck of a lot better than a corporate job for most of them. I have no idea if Marble falls into that category or not.

The odds of him ever making 500K overseas is pretty slim. Maybe after 3-4 years of proving himself and establishing himself in a certain country/region he can get there, but as of now he doesn't have the credentials.

I guess it depends on where he goes. In Europe he would probobly get close to 250k. If he could land in China, 500k is very accurate. We will know for sure if/when it happens. I still think a guy like him would rather play for 250k tax free dollars doing something he loves rather than 80k taxable dollars in the cooperate world. Get six months off without the former as well.

Are you sure about the bolded, underlined part?

I am pretty sure that if you are a US citizen you have to pay taxes regardless of where you are earning those wages. It is part of the reason that people holding dual citizenship have been releasing/waiving their US citizenship at higher percentages in the last several years.

What is this tax free that you people speak of? State? Federal? Both? As a US citizen you have to pay federal tax the the US whether you live and work in US, Ireland, Kenya, or the middle of the Atlantic.
