A 46-year-old Marion man died Thursday afternoon after falling through the ice at Chain Lakes County Park near Palo, according to a news release from the Linn County Sheriff’s Office.

Three men fell through the ice in a lake behind 8105 Chain Lake Rd., while ice fishing at about 2:40 p.m. Thursday. When emergency responders got to the scene, David Thomas, 67, of Marion, and Brad Holsinger, 66, of Walker, had pulled the third, Brian Thomas, 46, of Marion.

Brian Thomas was unconscious when he was pulled to the shore.

First responders started CPR on Brian Thomas and he was taken by ambulance to Mercy Medical Center, where he was pronounced deceased. The other two men were taken to Mercy and UnityPoint Health — St. Lukes for treatment of hypothermia, the release states.

Brian Thomas’ remains were transported to the state lab in Ankeny for autopsy.

The Sheriff’s Office was helped at the scene by the Monroe Fire Department, the Hiawatha Ambulance Service and the Cedar Rapids Fire Department.

With it being as warm as it has been its crazy to be out ice fishing. Not sure what the ice thickness was but based on the story it seems it wasnt thick enough. Unless there is more to the story they didnt discuss.

Others who ice fish can comment on local conditions better than I.
