Mark Turgeon out at Maryland

Just dumb. While I don’t think he’s a great coach I do think he knows what he’s doing. And you fire your coach 6-7 games into the season? WTF.

😮

Didn’t see that coming

Maryland must be re-evaluating the state of their program relative to Iowa b-ball in anticipation of
getting swept again by Iowa.

Turgeon good recruiter and so-so x-o coach, but with the treadmill of recruiting short duration 4 and 5 stars is pretty hard to reload every year.

Even Oregon with Altman is having an off year so far. Bennett at UVA is also down from his lofty hights. Looking back, Iowa played Oregon with Gatens back in NIT in Fran's 2nd or 3rd year...Altman was starting out at Oregon. Iowa also played UVA in NIT in Fran's 4th year and Bennetts early years at UVA. Since then Altman has gotten to NCAA final 4 and Bennet won it all...and Fran is yet to get to a sweet16, but is consistent at being close to average 0.500 in B1G.

Iowa's run of bad matchups in NCAA has been a problem---i.e. facing anyone with athletes that can exploit Fran's terrible defenses has limited Fran's NCAA success. This year at least has athletic squad, so maybe a Sweet16 if they make the tournament. Thanks to Murrays!

I am surprised. Turgeon always seemed like a good coach who had his teams prepared and recruited good talent. They didn't always do the best but they were on average a very competitive and good team. I doubt they will do much better with a different coach.

Watching them the other night you could see the players didn't seem to pay him any attention when he spoke.
He looked tired and worn out.

With Maryland's history I could see them wanting more out of the program than what he was delivering. Regular appearances in the 2nd round, but only one sweet sixteen has to be frustrating for their fanbase. Averaging a 22-11 record over his tenure is pretty hard to walk away from though. Over his 7 years in the Big Ten they only had one "bad" season where they missed the tourney. They would have easily made it in 2020 if it wasn't cancelled.

This does make you wonder if this is a turning point. They could make a dynamite hire and move to the next level. But they could also turn south if the interim coach is just a lame duck until a new one is hired at the end of the season and a year of recruiting is lost.

Man, writing that sounds awful familiar to 1999.

Gary Williams was a tough act to follow.

Yep

Not the right fit? What the heck does that even mean besides not winning enough games?

This stuff grinds my gears, I have to admit.

yeah, he was there 10 years, so it took them this long to figure out he was not a good fit?

i do think there were always some people who never liked him the day he was hired; not sure why, though (because he was a Kansas guy? his personality?)

Was looking forward to Maryland vs Michigan, a Turgeon vs Howard rematch - but it wasn't meant to be, apparently.
