With Maryland's history I could see them wanting more out of the program than what he was delivering. Regular appearances in the 2nd round, but only one sweet sixteen has to be frustrating for their fanbase. Averaging a 22-11 record over his tenure is pretty hard to walk away from though. Over his 7 years in the Big Ten they only had one "bad" season where they missed the tourney. They would have easily made it in 2020 if it wasn't cancelled.
This does make you wonder if this is a turning point. They could make a dynamite hire and move to the next level. But they could also turn south if the interim coach is just a lame duck until a new one is hired at the end of the season and a year of recruiting is lost.
Man, writing that sounds awful familiar to 1999.
