Marshall to Alabama?

Offering him 3 mil a year.

I'd chose Texas if I were him. Grant is a very good coach and they fired him. Altho, Marshall is a southern/white head coach and Grant isn't either. Plus at Alabama, you have to try and beat Kentucky all of the time.

IMO he'll hold out for a better opportunity-the best opportunity is not always the one that pays the most

That is true. And for all we know money may not be an issue for him. He may be perfectly happy where he is at.

Any rumors on Ben Jacobsen??

I don't know if is a possibility, but if either Smart or Marshall turn either of those two programs down, does Jacobsen become a candidate?

Jacobsen has been saying all along he is quite content at UNI. Surely his name will come up. I guess then we will find out if money talks and bullshit walks.

Speaking of.... Being reported by a few folks now that Alabama has been in contact with Richard Pitino of Minny. Seems like a bit of a step down from Marshall, but I guess they are exploring all options.

Marshall has been a hot commodity for 3-4 years, and he's still at Wichita State. I didn't think Alabama had the tradition and potential to lure him, but Texas might. I'll still have to see it to believe it. Power 5 conference jobs require a lot more PR by the coach, and I've seen it written that Marshall has a quirky personality. Would Texas fans embrace him if he weren't that likeable in his radio, tv, and donor PR responsibilities? I'd say there's a fair chance he's still at Wichita State next season.

I am sure he does like it in Cedar Falls. But the guy must have "some" ambition to do bigger things, yes?

No, only twice a year. Lot of wins up for grabs in that conference.

I don't know about that. Does anyone pay attention to Alabama basketball?

Obviously there is some of that aspect but I wouldn't think its nearly as bad as most other conferences and certainly not like a place where bball is the #1 sport.

There just doesn't seem to be much attention given to sec basketball programs other than Florida and UK.

For someone that seems to have zero inside info, you like to insinuate Jacobson shouldn't be content at UNI, and would jump at a larger salary. Many good mid major coaches have disappeared after taking the jump to schools offering money and visibility. Maybe Jacobson prefers maintaining a successful program rather than rebuilding? Maybe having some semblance of a family life means more than 16 hour days at a power conference school?

When I went to Central College Ron Schipper was up there with Bear Bryant in wins IIRC. Maybe he was unambitious so he stayed in Pella 35 years.

Isn't Jacobsen from North Dakota, or play at North Dakota.

UNI and Cedar Falls, and even Iowa weather must seem to be a major lifestyle improvement. Plus, a million bucks a year goes along way toward securing your grandchildren's financial security for the rest of their lives.

Very secure in his job. If recruiting picks up just a little UNI will win that conference more regularly and/or have a sufficiently good record to get the rare at large from the Valley. He obviously has shown an ability to do more with less.

Why move. Job satisfaction is important to a lot of people.

Alabama's desperate. Don't let the fact that they're the second-winningest SEC hoops program deceive you, it's still a bad basketball school and unless it's Cal, Coach K, or Pitino Sr., it's going to be tough to win there. HS hoops stars in AL don't dream of playing for Bama or Auburn, they dream of playing for Kentucky, Duke, even Memphis. They're better off paying $2 million to a guy who can make the most out of the scrap heap. Marshall could be good but they'd be waaaay overpaying for his services. Maybe they could lure Russell Turner out of UC-Irvine. Or Mike Young from Wofford (he's at least familiar with the general region). They might not win big at Bama, but there's no reason for the U of A to shoot for anything less than a Dance berth most years. It can be done - just ask Wimp Sanderson.
