Martinson twins to Iowa

Both 2-time Iowa placewinners (3rd-5th so fairly high). Smaller one went 3-2 at Fargo and bigger one went 0-2. We’ve had a pretty good track record with twins: Banachs, Steiners, Brands and then a few others where one twin panned out more.

Interesting how after so much of our current success has come from Ohio and Pennsylvania recruits we’ve recently recruited mostly Iowa guys. Maybe it doesn’t mean anything and we just like these recruits as much or more as the kids out-of-state but I thought it was interesting.

it does mean something. With Seabolt, big game, etc iowa high school wrestling is at a high level with big recruits. great to see!

The quality of recruit from Iowa has improved vs. 4-5 years ago. That said, some of the recent recruits including the Martinsons are...wait for it...room guys. (Cue everyone losing their minds thinking that's an insult.) Not uncommon for them to be good, hard working Iowa kids.

All it means is that Iowa High School wrestling has upped its game currently. Ayala, Jesuroga and Keuter are very highly ranked guys, and Rathjen and Riggins not as high in the rankings but very good too.

There were several out of State studs in Iowa City last weekend, they are still being targeted certainly. When studs are in your backyard you take them if you can get them. They are, we did.

Some of the other in-State guys will fill out the roster and dream of hitting the big stage for the Hawks, and be part of big things hopefully and attend a DI University with all the trimmings, close to Family and friends. Win-Win for everybody.

The Hawks will recruit Nationally like they always have, no concern there whatsoever. You get whatever local studs you can, then you can work on need weights Nationally, and if you've got another can't miss with interest who projects close to a weight you already filled, you take them too and work it out as you go.

IMO, Iowa has some pretty fine depth right now in many weights. We're as deep as anyone in the country. There are no guarantees, but All is good.

I would not imagine the twins used up many monetary schollie resources, would they?
This isn't men's football and basketball where everyone including the guy mopping the floor gets a full ride. Only 9.9 scholarships to give, so they are spread across the entire team. It's a big deal just to get offered roster spot.

Aware. But I am guessing they didn’t use up much money, which is what I said

All of these guy won't stick around for 4 years, Once the lineups become apparent and holes pop up in other programs they'll duck out - and I don't blame em.
That has always happened, and it's not changing now.

No. But they get to be part of the Iowa Wrestling Team, and go to school in-State which is monetarily better for them too (unless they got better offers in one of the lower Divisions if they were so inclined, in or out of Iowa).

There is absolutely no downside to any of these commits. It's a dream come true for all these kids.

I've been very critical on the quality of Iowa high school wrestling, over all, for at least the last ten years. It's on the upswing, and looks to be getting much better with the involvement of these clubs.

That said, I'm sure the national search for elite guys hasn't changed.

I am aware . I was just saying that more than likely no much money was used. Nothing more. Lighten up

Kueter is on the football budget. Jesuroga is blue chip and Riggins right there. Griffith and the Martinson boys are obviously going to use less resources than a Jesuroga but still very important to the health of the program. For starters sometimes a non blue chip blows up and becomes an AA starter but even if they don't they provide critical training to the guys who are starting while also sharpening their own skills. Guys like Wilson, Turk, Glazier, Moody, Costello, Happel have all made important contributions to the team pushing starters or spot starting and also achieved individual successes either in opens or international competition.

They’re gooder than most. That’s what it means.

True that. I know a kid who wanted to wrestleD1 and he could only find one program that would give him a spot on the team. Also, if I am remembering the numbers correctly, half the Iowa is not getting any money and well over half the PSU team is not getting any money. A lot of coaches like to use the "you can earn a scholarship" line on kids that are not considered blue chippers.
I know of another D1 program what brought in 9-11 guys last year and 2 of them are on some athletic aid. Money is tight in the wrestling world. It just goes to show how big the desire to compete and excel is among wrestlers.

this board lately...

so you are saying that Brody Grothus does count against the 9.9 scholarships this year or is he considered Dead cap money ? Also please be clear what weight do you project Brody at and will he challenge Teasdale for a starting spot or not ? Inquiring minds want to know ????????

No need for those 2. Joe Slaton is holding down the spot for the foreseeable future.

I think they're both waiting for word on if Slaton is eligible, because the spot would be his.

This. They don’t all leave, per your post. I talked with Mark Perry at a practice, and asked him why some of the wrestlers you mentioned didn’t go elsewhere. He said “I don’t know, they could certainly make the lineup elsewhere.” They just want to be Hawks and finish what they start.

Guys want to get in the best wrestling room possible. With the new transfer rule, they can go to another program without sitting out if things don't work out. Iowa offers a great facility (now and future), great coaching and great practice partners! Go Hawks!

Your comprehension skills need some tightening. You asked the question, I answered it, straightforward and simple, not an ounce of vitriol.
