Maryland is the most difficult matchup for our defense in the regular season

I think the video below speaks for itself. Keep in mind that we struggled running against Minnesota's defense and so did Ohio State. Not a good team to be playing with injuries at linebacker.

Minny schemed our outside zone (stretch) play well (and we stubbornly didn't run more power to Young), but Minny's scheme against Maryland is not good. That's why these teams do not consistently play good defense, because they change their scheme for every team. Iowa won't play some gimmicky scheme against Maryland (we'll do what we always do), our D-line won't get moved liked Minny's is in this game, and I hope to shout we tackle better. We rarely give up big plays like this, and I don't see that changing. Maryland will have to sustain drives if they hope to score and we can't give them any bunnies with turn overs. Penn St. and containing McSorley will be our biggest challenge of the year in my opinion.

A few rebuttals

Iowa plays far better run contain to ever let those massive holes open up

Iowa is technically proficient at tackling
Iowa even with the injuries are technically good in coverage

Maryland has to come to Kinnick

If Iowa comes out and moves the ball like they did against Minnesota and IU, they roll. Maryland can't pass the ball

Normally teams that are this one dimensional don't fare well against Iowa's defense. We'll make them drive the field consistently, and it takes a sound fundamental team to do that numerous times in the game. It also appears that BF and Stanley are finding their groove right now with a nice pass/run mix.

Maryland had something like 80 yards of offense entering the 4th quarter against Michigan.

As has been mentioned, one dimensional offenses generally don’t give Iowa much trouble. That said, they will have to be disciplined.

If Iowa average or better, they will win.

Maryland is a lot like the 2007 Illinois team that had a solid spread offense, but was much more ground-based out of it.

The only difference being that players are even faster and schemes have evolved some from even 10 years ago.

Cup cake sked and now worried about MD defense. Good grief. Play like champions and earn it instead of getting it given to you.

This doom and gloom stuff is gettin' kinda old. I know Iowa isn't the type of team that can roll out of bed and beat any opponent, but at this point there is every reason to believe that this team should stomp everyone left on the schedule, including the Nittany Pussies.

What's wrong with being given championships? Bama gets handed championship opportunities all the time, irregardless if they take advantage of it. Just the fact that they are given those opportunities goes against what you are saying.......

Just sayin.

I'll echo the posters focusing on the one dimensionality of the Maryland team likely being their downfall Saturday. We need to keep our offense on track. Is Maryland decent defensively? Fortunately we are hitting our stride on offense right now so that makes us a much tougher team.

That was some atrocious D-line play. I don't expect to see our DT's running away from the ball 50% of the time. My god, that was ridiculous.

Middle of the pack in scoring D, upper half in run and pass D. Similar to where Indy was coming into the Iowa game. Not to say I expect the exact same thing, as I think Maryland has a better secondary.

Part of why Minnesota defended the run well against both Iowa and Ohio State was because they played with such poor gap discipline against Maryland. Just within the first 2 minutes that you posted ... each play clearly displayed either poor fundamentals or a blown gap assignment.

Don't get me wrong ... I agree with you that Maryland has excellent speed ... and that they're capable of running the ball well if you're not playing sound run-D.

I actually think Maryland will be the easiest team to defend, not the hardest. Have you followed Iowa football before? Iowa always crushes one dimensional teams like that.

Our linebackers are getting healthy and should be in good shape by next Saturday. Our defense is much more disciplined than the gophers were that day and won't give them huge lanes to run through. Obviously the gophers have emphasized improved run defense since that game.

Maryland has averaged less than 100 yards passing in their last four games. I don’t think Maryland can gain more than 150 yards on the ground. Maryland’s going to need a lot more offense then they’ve shown to win.
