Suck it, Cedar Rapids!

(ABC 6 News) - Wednesday, Mason City was designated as one of 10 cities in the United States and the only city in Iowa to be a runner up for the “All-America City Award”.

“Mason City is honored to be a finalist,” said Mayor Bill Schickel. “A huge thank you to everyone involved.”

A team of Mason City residents, business representatives and government officials made a final presentation earlier in the day to the annual meeting of the National Civic League. It was the final step in Mason City’s nomination to receive the 2020 All-America City Award.

The award recognizes the work of communities in using inclusive civic engagement to address critical issues and create stronger connections among residents, businesses and nonprofit and government leaders. Since the program's inception in 1949, some 500 communities nationwide have been named All-America Cities.

“All-America City finalists and winners find it easier to attract and retain businesses that generate jobs and a stronger tax base,” said City Administrator Aaron Burnett. “They also attract and retain residents who want a healthy community. Finalists and winners also have seen an increase in tourism and grants.”

Previous Iowa winners include Dubuque, Ames and Des Moines.

The league noted Mason City’s River City Renaissance Project and the downtown revitalization it has stimulated, the “Make Mason City Sparkle” campaign where volunteers are working on tree planting, flower bed improvements and river cleanup, along with the community’s “Healthy Choices” initiative.

LOL. Edged out Fort Dodge, Muscatine and Ottumwa. Are these the same people who voted for Jamie Pollard as AD of the Year?

Mason isn't the worst place to live. If they added a few more decent food options, moved NW Steakouse, then bulldozed everything north of Birdsalls they would be on their way.

Mccloskey Appliance can stay, have had good luck with them.

Loved growing up there, thought it was the greatest place on earth. I would agree it's a shell of what it was in the 80's. But I still like to go back a few times a year and enjoy the downtown area. Now that Principal is closing the building I wonder if those employees will stay in town or move away. That will be a blow to the downtown not having those 400 people walking around daily.

Sioux City won that award 30 years ago. So Mason City is 30 years behind Sioux City. Yep, sounds about right.

Want to know how cruddy a town is checklist:

look at animal shelter website to see how many pit bulls they have for adoption.

see if the city wasted time/money on awards nobody cares about to try and show you they are not shitty.
