Matt Campbell, Iowa State and being favored in 11 of 12 games

Phil Steele shares, "this is a very talented team that will be favored in 11 of their 12 games and (Matt) Campbell has turned the Cyclones into a national contender."

All this despite losing 9, 5, 5, 6 and 3 games in his first five seasons leading the Boyz from Ames.

He is 2-1 vs. Northern Iowa and 1-1-1 in regulation over his first five years. UNI is clearly no Louisiana-Lafayette, who took the Cyclones down 31-14.

How special are the Cyclones on special teams?

KR Kene Nwangwu averaged 28.9 yards per return, including an 85 yarder. He and Iowa premier KR/WR Ihmir Smith-Marsette are with the Minnesota Vikings in 2021.

PS says the Cyclones "do lose their top guy in KR Kene Nwangwu (28.9) but can only improve."

How big in Week 2 was the turnover by the Cyclones on their punt return team in that 18-17 loss?

Matt Campbell is 0-4 vs. Iowa. The lone major program that Iowa State plays regularly that he hasn't beat. "Campbell is just 7-11 in September."

Give that guy a Big Gulp, but the "national title contender" talk for a coach and team with 3 to 6 losses each season, as a program, with this roster appears far premature.

The Oregon win was nice. Iowa State was -5 favorite. Oregon wasn't good last season at QB. Phil Steele sees Oregon #2 in the Pac 12 North behind Washington for 2021, by the way.

Iowa State is 9-11 under Matt Campbell as a home favorite. The big loss last year was Louisiana (-11).

What will it be in 2021?

Northern Iowa, Iowa, Kansas (W), Oklahoma State (HC), Texas and TCU are the 2021 home games for the Cyclones.

Only six home games. Five of nine Big 12 games are on road. ISU was 7-6 with similar schedule in 2019.

Oklahoma State is 4-1 against Matt Campbell. Oklahoma is only 4-2.

Same Oklahoma who are 0-2 the past two seasons against K-State, while Campbell is now 2-3 against the Wildcats, after splitting with them the past two seasons.

OU wins the Big 12 most years, but like Michigan State in hoops, last national title was in 2000.

Baylor also beat Iowa State in Waco in 2019. Nearly won in Ames last year, as the Cyclones pulled out a 38-31 win fueled by their missing RB for 2021.

QB Matt Purdy threw three interceptions to fall behind 24-10. Baylor was fueled by four ISU turnovers for 24 points.

Iowa State was a minus 2 at home in turnovers, plus 5 on road. Fwiw
