I am not a Greco guy by any means. I want the sport to do well and I have my own ideas on how to make that happen. But man is Matt Lindland the best interview in sports. Doesn't mince words at all, stunningly frank. If you have the chance, search "coach lindland report" on the fivepointmove.com site. He goes into vivid detail on how he runs the program.

Someone send Matt a copy of this book.

Shortly after he took his current job he did an interview and lost me at (pararphrasing):

"Kids should forego college schlarships awarded for folkstyle and should instead pay their own way in college to wrestle greco."

This coming from a guy who benefited from a college scholarship wrestling folkstyle.

He's certainly relaxed on that point. But he is correct in that we need a base of greco-only athletes if we are going to succeed. The athletes that he wants are going to need a life after wrestling. He'd better figure out a way to get guys a college education and wrestle greco full time.

He's the head coach, yet he keeps pushing all responsibility off onto these 20 year old athletes. Own it.

He seemed very candid about the kids. I liked it. I also thought he realized the totality of his problems. Kids need money/life after wrestling, they need to go to college, they like folk style, our culture pulls them in a direction that does not lead to being a champion. I got the feeling that he will work toward the solutions and he has the passion to stick with the process. To be honest, I was a bit inspired.
All that was missing was a picture of Sansouci's wife. :)

That was my thought. If he feels those wrestlers are not doing what they need, that's between he and them. As the coach speaking to the fans, he needs to take ownership; not throw the kids under the bus.

Kept saying "we need leadership"... Um, leadership starts at the top.

To be fair, I can understand his frustration seeing that the freestyle team is now at the top of the game. Personally, I'd rather they scrap greco and add more freestyle weights.

This is not the 1st time he's deflected the blame of a disappointing tournament finish by US athletes under his watch.

Until just a bit ago I hadn't even watched the clip as Lindand lost my attention a while ago with some of his ideas, comments and blames games. For whatever reason (insomnia) I just took the 10 minutes to look at the video. If guys are not doing what they are suppose to on and off the mat in preparation to reach their goals then he has a point.
