Matt "The Punt God" Araiza

That's one of those rules they made because everyone was getting it wrong.
Same reason why "irregardless" can be found in the dictionary now.
That’s not what the linked article says. Further meant “also” and “farther,” and still does, while “farther” meant and means “farther”. At least, according to Merriam-Webster.

Bills P Matt Araiza has been accused of rape in a civil lawsuit filed in California state court.

Araiza is accused along with two other players from his alma mater San Diego State. The alleged incident took place last October at an off-campus party. It is an extremely disturbing allegation, one that will draw an NFL investigation.

I'm very surprised that the Bills knew of something around this and took him anyway. Not because I think any sports team is particularly "better than that." But because they are extremely committed to culture and zero distractions, and this year is super bowl or bust. And they are 100% positive vibes right now. It's crazy to me that they would have opened themselves up to a distraction like this over a punter.

Even if he's the greatest punter ever. I he had flubbed a field goal hold in the preseason he would have been cut, so it's not like he's indispensible. The Bills don't even punt that much.

I have to imagine that unless this story falls apart in the next 72 hours or something, he's gone. I can't imagine them just letting the process play out.

agreed, with all the recent bad pub the NFL got from Watson they are going to come down hard on this guy I would presume

What if it's another Duke Lacrosse situation and it's 100% bullshit? Not saying it is or isn't, but it's been a long time since she went to police and nothing has happened yet? Seems a little strange. If he was part of what ever they say then lock him up, but you kind of have to see how this plays out considering the circumstances.

He may well never be charged. He may not have done anything.

But the Bills have a Super Bowl to win, that's their job, that's what they owe the community and the fans, and that responsibility trumps their responsibility to due process for this one guy. If he's cleared months from now, he will have a punting career.

Unless this story falls apart within days, and he has incontrovertible truth that he was somewhere else or whatever, I don't think they can go into season with this distraction. I don't think they can possibly afford to trot all their beloved stars like Allen, Diggs, Hyde, Poyer out in front of the media and put them in the impossible position to either throw a teammate under the bus or say something callous (or will be portrayed as such).

For a team in another position at another stage, with another player, maybe.

The Bills cut Matt Haack last week and he has already been picked up by the Colts. They are kind of pot committed on this guy at this point. If they cut him, they are going to be scrapping the bottom of the barrel for a new punter now. They may not punt much, but Buffalo in December and (possibly) January is a place where a good punter can make a big difference in a tight game.

Did they know something before the draft? The article on ESPN said they found out in late July. The draft was in April.

Not going to be any better situation if he ends up suspended later in the season.

It's not a tenable situation to go into the season with this unresolved. You can't put Josh Allen out there to answer questions about the punter week after week from reporters hell bent on getting a viral quote out of him. It's just impossible.

There's been conflicting reports, but it seems most likely that NFL teams did not no about it. It sounds like the Bills likely became aware about six weeks ago. But they definitely knew before they cut the other punter, that's what I can't quite wrap my head around. Haak was pretty bad last year, but he had a pretty good camp, why not give it another week or so. Although it's quite possible the civil suit was being held until he won the job, so who knows.

The lawyers on both sides seem exceptionally clownish for being involved in a high profile case, so I'm not sure how good the information/communication was that the Bills were getting from either side of the case.

"We had sex, get tested" to "I'm Matt Araiza, and I have no recollection of these events" real quick.

I guess you’d have to look at the history of the dictionary, but I contend that saying that further can mean the same as farther is a fairly recent change.

You called it - well done sir!

It is, which is why I wonder about the lack of a criminal case? Clearly there could be an investigation going on, but for the alleged victim to file a civil suit with no criminal case going seems odd. And, before someone says scam, he’s a rookie punter. He isn’t exactly loaded.

There has been a criminal investigation ongoing since the day after it happened from what I’ve read. They’re moving too slow, the girl and her family should have filed suit awhile ago to try to push the police and da to do something.

Saw on Twitter (so idk how correct it is) that the guy has only collected 300k in guarantees before his release

Ahhh, okay. Most times you hear about civil after criminal in order to use anything that was turned up, or legal findings already in the books.

SDPD closed their investigation awhile ago. The school still has one open.

I think they waited to start civil proceedings until the police closed their investigation, as charges would have obviously strengthened the case even more.

Disappointing episode, but the Bills did what I expected.
