Maybe this is what happens when your coach calls a ref a cheat

27-6 free throw disparity.
Sure we played like $hit and the refs made sure we would.

During the homestretch our coach can't control himself, something he insists upon from his players.
Something beyond a 2 game suspension should come from this.

You need to smile while you cuss...that was Bo Ryan and Izzo's secret. I wager going beat red and accusing a ref of stealing games and being crooked is not a good way to win positive influence with refs.

Fran made this bed and he’s gotta sleep in it.

Can Patrick get out of his LOI? If he can I wouldn’t be surprised if maybe Fran would pull an Alford and leave. I think Fran won’t stick around, this season is a disaster and he’s lost control of his program.

Yep. Just not sure who it reflects more poorly on. Him or the refs. Lack of professionalism all around.

Nah...Fran is very passionate and the big ten refs suck....Not that I agree with it but this loss was on Fran. You could clearly see the refs sending a message. You could tell Speraw wanted to lose it tonight a couple times but he new he couldn't. He looked so frustrated with the officiating.

I agree Kirk was getting after them versus Francis who just stood there with deer in headlights

I'm ready for a clean slate, whether it translates to an 0 for everything next year and beyond, so be it.
A good coach with the right assistants can bring back a down program in 3 to 4 years.
If they fail then on to the next coach.
Me. I don't care how long it takes, I won't be alive long enough to witness multiple coaching changes.
What I do know is Fran needs to raise the white flag and move on. He's done all he can do here at Iowa. Multiple years ending in failure is unexceptionable.

Fran is going nowhere unless another school offers him a job for equal or greater pay. The chances of that happening are less than my winning the lottery Saturday.

Good Coach? Iowa NEEDS is another George Raveling type recruiter. some one with connections and knows how to close a star recruit. Coaching basketball is not brain surgery, but it is challenging. Iowa needs a new coach who can go into various inner cities where the hotbeds for basketball star athletes are and recruit against the big boys for four star talents (top 25-75) kids. Iowa has to do a radical move and hire a Blue Blood program's top recruiting assistant and who is young (age 35-45). Waiting for a minor league coach to hit stardom isn't going to do it anymore at Iowa. Passing on Ben Jacobsen at Iowa. He has fallen to Earth recently.

Biggest obstacle: Gary Barta.

The buyout for this level of coach is hilarious. I find Fran to be a huge hypocrite. If a player acted the way that he does then he’d be gone or suspended indefinitely but we are talking about a grown man. Plus he’s a huge d*ck to the local media guys. His outbursts serve no purpose. Refs aren’t intimidated by him and the players must have tuned him out by now.

Let's pretend the OP is correct. Big Ten officiating is out to get Iowa because our coach is mean to them (For clarification, I'm not condoning Fran's behavior). That says even more about how bush league Big 10 officiating is.

One of the podcasts mentioned Fran Fraschilla talking about current Big Ten refs and he said there are a lot of B level officials that are easily intimidated by the big name coaches. I assume being a ref must be difficult because they have to make bang-bang calls but the inconsistency is maddening at times. They say before the season starts that they are going to get rid of grabbing and hand-checking or anything that impedes “freedom of movement” but as the season plays itself out they just let the mugging escalate. Teams like Michigan State can absolutely assault your players and the refs choose not to clear it up but then they call seemingly ticky-tack stuff on everyone else. It’s very unfortunate.

I agree with you. He's still in the early stage of his contract extension. Don't see any movement soon unless the team fails to show up for practice. (sarcasm).

Fran isn’t walking away from millions and no power school would hire him away considering his buyout, lack of success, and greatest hits on YouTube.

Iowa shot 36 FT’s against Rutgers.

The neverending whining is indicative of a fanbase with a loser mentality. According to the "refs are out to get Fran" crowd, an entire pantheon of officials over nine years has gone out of their way to stick it to Iowa just to make a point to Fran. It COULD be true, but it is more logical to say Iowa just hasn't been very good during Fran's tenure and, specifically, not physical enough to compete the way B1G basketball has always been officiated. A coach can continue to bitch about the way the game is called or he can adjust the type of players he recruits and how he trains them. Fran has chosen the first option.

Referees have nothing to do with how awful Iowa plays individually and as a team. Quit using the refs as a crutch.

Fouls were 25-13. Almost every college basketball game the officials will even this number up or close to over the course of a game. Officials are clearly sending a message.

Yup agree. I don’t care if the fouls are 45-1 against Iowa, Iowa’s defense is garbage. They can’t defend a junior high team.

There was a coach a few years that made a comment about Iowa “ they allow their offense to dictate their defense or vice versa.” Basically saying they were mentally weak and let the negative play on one end affect the other end. I see that a lot out of this years team again! Fran just can’t coach and his program was known for development (white, Olaseni, etc). But I think that more the players and not the coaching.

Do what Michigan did, but also buy their leeway with officials because of their name recognition in sports.

If we can do that, then maybe we can play for a national championship as well.

Nobody else in the Big Ten is.....well except Hack-a-Bucky when they had all those near-7 footers who could shoot 3s.

Why would you quit and walk away from that huge buyout? We are stuck with Fran for at least two to three more years.

Then I hope Barta puts some pressure on him( I know that wont happen).

Fran has to use the transfer market at some point. 90% of schools are using it, Fran only has players leave, never brings them in.

We will never get a fair called game by the refs as long as Fran is the coach. You can just watch the game and see that what they call a foul on the other team is not a foul for Iowa and it's pretty obvious.

When Iowa doesn't pound the ball inside to its bigs, doesn't drive to the hoop, and settles for poor jump shots (Cook fadeaway anybody?) then the refs don't have very many chances to call fouls. Meanwhile, look at how Happ abused Iowa's bigs. And to think we had idiots here questioning if Happ deserves all B1G.

In those idiots defense, Happ was going up against Iowa’s bigs

they seemed to be on our side for the RU game, so what are you talking about?

you do realize it is hard to get fouled, when you play like pansies and do nothing to get fouled....???

this team is playing like garbage, don't cry about the refs.....

You don't get fouled shooting jump shots. This team has stopped driving to the basket where fouls occur. That, plus losing total interest in the game.
EVEN I KNOW THIS! And I'm a bball moron :).

Either the coaches are dumb as shit or the players don't listen. Either way........

What message were they sending in the Rutgers game? Also, Iowa intentionally fouled Happ multiple times which inflated the overall number of fouls called against Iowa.

Obviously sending a message that he was right .
Any ref that would penalize the players for the actions of their coach is very immature and also cheating if they are not calling the game correctly.
