Joey McKenna didn't make weight in Brazil and is out for Jr Worlds. Pretty much eliminates our shot at a Jr World Team title. What a bummer. I don't see how that can happen at this level.

If I remember correctly they got an allowance for the wrestle off and he didn't make weight at seniors either. On FRL they mentioned the issue of him winning the spot, but having not made the weight anytime recently.

If this is true then fault US Jr Worlds leadership.

Damn. I was really hoping Joey could pull off the gold. Kid has to be devastated.

@CPyles8: Update on McKenna. Was 60.0 on check scale. Weighed 60.1 on official scale. What a punch to the gut. Cant help but feel for Joey right now.

That doesn't seem right, wouldn't they be able to correct that with an official if the check scale is light? If anything check scales are supposed to be heavy. Also, I doubt he would have been the only one affected or burned by this if true.

Another question...only being .1 kg over wouldn't he have had time to lose the weight? I don't know international rules. Do you only get one shot at weigh ins? Was he up against a time deadline?

His fault for cutting it that close with no allowance for time to burn it...dumb

I've known Joey since he was a little kid; he always carried a lot of "baby fat" even wrestling year round. I always thought he must just be genetically pre- disposed.

Worst possible sport for someone with that makeup. It's amazing he's at the level he is. Terrible break for him, and I'm sure he did everything he could.

I watched an interview with Joey and he broke it down this way. He was over by a couple pounds with over two hours till weigh ins. He through on the sweats and jumped on a bike and got his sweat going. He dried himself off, so he could pass the hydration test or whatever and then stepped on the check scale. He was right on weight 60kg, so he went and weighed in on the official scale. The official scale said that he was .2 kgs over. He said "WTF" the check scale is off. The officials gave him 9 minutes to lose the weight. He jumped on a bike and tried to get a sweat going and his coaches grabbed a pair of scissors and started cutting his hair. He sweat for a bit and then he jumped off, dried off put on his singlet, stepped on the scale and he was .1 kgs over. And that was that.

He was obviously bummed and he said that he felt that he let his country down. He also mentioned that his side of the bracket looked week. The Iranian, the Azerbaijani and the Russian were all on the other side of the bracket.

I really thought USA had a shot at winning the team title. 4th place sucks.

What an extra 10 minutes can change someone's life. All of the "should have done this" and "shouldn't have done thats". I guarantee he'll think about this day for the rest of his life. Too bad, I'm sure he's hurting bad.

HOWEVER, I'm sure he'll never jump on a scale again and be a fraction over. And I bet the wrestlers and coaches around him will learn something as well.
