McNamara doesn't grip the laces when passing. Why not?

As you can see in the photo below from the Press-Citizen, McNamara has an unorthodox style of propelling the football. In this picture, he seems to be pushing it more than throwing it. Anyway, I've never heard of anyone, let alone a major college QB, throwing without using the laces. Anyone know why McNamara is doing this? Has he always done it? Anybody ask Lester about it? Just wondering because it's pretty dang weird.

And you can't judge the "pushing" from that mechanic. Many QB's are in the position as they are loading to throw.
 
I believe Coach Don Patterson commented on this on the Hawkeye of the Storm podcast after the Troy game. He said that QBs often do it this way when quick releases are required. FWIW.
