Medical Redshirt is a possibility for Cooper Koch

Good story previewing the IU game.

Some excerpts:

Drew Thelwell could be available for Iowa basketball’s matchup with Indiana on Saturday. Freshman Cooper Koch will not be, according to coach Fran McCaffery.

Thelwell did not play in Tuesday's overtime win over Nebraska due to a “lingering lower leg” injury.

Asked Thursday if he expects Thelwell to play against Indiana, McCaffery said: “I do. But I really have no basis to say that from a medical standpoint. It’s really dependent on how he feels. We’ll just be really smart with how we use him these next two days (Thursday and Friday) and try to get him ready.”

Koch, who has already been unavailable for four games this season, is dealing with an undisclosed health issue. His absence is a hit to Iowa’s depth. The freshman averages 4.6 points and 2.1 rebounds per contest while shooting 42.9% from deep.

McCaffery said seeking a medical redshirt for Koch is a possibility.

“It’s not been easy for him,” McCaffery said. “I really feel for him because he’s a wonderful kid and a really good player. We could really use him and he desperately wants to be out there. But we’re on top of his health situation, which is the most important thing.”
