If you want to visualize how the Hawkeyes can beat MSU on Saturday, and if you need a powerful fix before then, head to YouTube and watch the highlights of Iowa's 2009 15-13 win in East Lansing and 2010s blowout in Iowa City. Both games were broadcast beautifully, too.

That 2009 win that came on 4th down on the last play of the game when "7 got 6" is one of the greatest games I have ever seen, and perhaps it was the single most brutal. Both Iowa and MSU made incredible goal line stands, so nobody could cross the goal line until the final 2 minutes. At that point Iowa led 9-6...all FGs by both teams...and then, on a desperation drive under Kirk Cousins (Washington Redskins now), after Iowa collected a couple of sacks on blitzes--yes, Iowa has blitzed successfully--MSU ran a perfect hook-and-lateral that set up a Cousins TD pass with 1:32 left that put MSU ahead 13-9.

Iowa was 7-0 and riding an 11-game winning streak going back to 2008. But looked like the streak was about to end, yet Ricky Stanzi and Company marched down the field and won in the most dramatic fashion possible. The look on Dantonio's face when McNutt caught that slant is one I'll never forget. As the announcer said, "Michigan State just had their hearts ripped out." I hope those highlights are on a loop in the Football Operations Center right now along with....

...Iowa's 2010 blowout of MSU in Kinnick. I clearly remember Herbstreit saying as they switched from the studio to the game that Michigan State would "blow the Hawkeyes out." Well, Herbie is consistent in his failings as Iowa smashed the Spartans 37-6. MSU entered the game 8-0, including a win over Notre Dame, but they never had a chance against the Hawkeyes.

One of the highlights of that one, of course, was the Sash interception of Cousins when Tyler lateralled back to Micah Hyde who made a brilliant return and dived head-long over the pylon for the TD.

Iowa also has a pair of OT wins over MSU in its 4-3 mark against the Dantonio-led Spartans, but 2009 and 2010 were Iowa awesome.

So can the Hawkeyes do it again on Saturday? History says yes.

The 2009 thriller was similar to another high profile Iowa-MSU game in 1960. #1 ranked iowa was trailing MSU 15-14 in East Lansing with time running out and the Spartans killing the clock. Unbelievably, the QB botched the handoff, and Iowa DB Joe Williams, (they played both ways then and he was a FB on offense) charged into the MSU backfield, caught the fumble in mid-air and ran it back 60 yards or so for the go-ahead TD. Iowa scored again late for a 27-15 win.

He is trying to be a smarty. I suspect he is referring to the fact that Iowa had to attempt the try, which Ricky Stanzi downed, as to not allow MSU any chance at returning the try attempt for 2 pts of their own.
I stand corrected. But still, useless fact. He's got a good memory though, I'll give him that.

Correct.

I just find the memory function so interesting. Fifty years from now, only NYC will have been attacked on 9/11.

Ahhh, the ol' show 'em the ball Chuckie play.

Seems like yesterday.

Nice, but that still doesn't make up for the year before when Long was in for the TD at the end and no official wanted to make the call. They just stood around and looked at each other.

Before I get into the post I wanted to make about this series, that 1985 game may be one of the more under-rated games in CFB history.

Lots of great college football players including future HOFers on the field that day. Norm Parker as an assistant on the MSU sidelines vs Hayden Fry. A back-and-forth game that had a fantastic finish (I mean how many big-time games are won on a naked bootleg?), and was nationally televised on CBS.

This game needs to find its way onto BTN and ESPN Classic.

You're right, Evilmonkey, that was a helluva game. Iowa-MSU have had some beauties. I was just referencing the Dantonio years, but I'll never forget that '85 game, either.

Iowa's had some great wins in this series. Not already mentioned are the 1990 game in E. Lansing to start off the Big Ten season our last Rose Bowl year; 1994 at home against Tony Banks as 10 point dogs with no healthy QB; 2000 at home to break the long losing streak; the absolute shellacking in '02; and the OT win in '07 in that peculiar up-and-down year.

That is why he held the ball up in this game the following year...he told Hayden he wanted to be sure the officials saw him cross the goal line this time.

I was at the 2009 game and it was one of the greatest experiences of my life. Me and a buddy tailgated in the rain all day and about an hour before kickoff the rain stopped and the skies were then perfectly clear. It was a crisp fall night and absolutely perfect weather wise.

We sat in the middle of MSU fans with not another Iowa fan in sight. We got mocked early, often, and throughout the game. When we scored the go ahead touchdown (it wasn't the last play, the refs made us do the extra point although if I remember right, Stanzi just took a knee) we went completely nuts and the stadium went almost dead silent. We waited around for a couple hours after the game and congratulated the players as they came out. The campus was like a ghost town by the time we walked back to our cars.

I also went to the game at Spartan Stadium in 2012 with my wife. That was a miserable game to attend weather wise but also a lot of fun since Iowa won. I figure I'm good luck for the Hawks when we play at MSU.

I personally preferred the 08 game.:) I was on my honeymoon in Mexico. My brother was texting me score updates. Little did I know that international texts cost 50 cents each. Ouch.

We lost that one.
