2021-2022 Schedule

That's a pretty lousy schedule for my first year of season tickets.
  • 8 of 11 non-con games at home, mostly weak / meager teams
  • No neutral site tournament
  • One neutral site game vs. Utah State - seems like an odd choice
  • ISU and B1G/ACC challenge games both on the road
  • Only three weekend home games total, plus a couple non-cons on a Friday night
  • Of those three B1G home games on a weekend, only 1 on a Saturday, and one on Super Bowl Sunday, which seems like that happens a lot
  • Three Monday night home conference games - why? Terrible
Now I'm kind of wishing I had stuck to my older strategy of cherry picking the 5-6 games a year I wanted to attend. I can't see venturing out on many weeknights to go see those awful non-con home games.

The big ten is a tough schedule on its own but two challenging games out of 12 non conference games is a bit ridiculous. It’s a good way to get Iowa fans to lose interest.

At minimum, 30 percent of the games on non conference should be interesting. If you can’t get 4 quality non conference games signed your doing a terrible scheduling job.

I like Utah state game. Why not at least play one Missouri valley game, doesn’t have to be home and home I would think. And then a add a big east/sec/pac12 game.

I won't comment on the BIG schedule, it is what it is. The Non Con schedule is absolute and total garbage.

It's a pretty young team that will need to find its chemistry. I am glad that they won't be challenged right out of the gate. The B1G is going to be a meat grinder for them, though.

Start of B1G is tough, especially for a team with so much turnover from last year. I think there are more than two challenging game in non-conference, but every year we wonder why we need more than 2-3 total cupcakes and can't find a few more mid-level (top 100-150) opponents.

Over under on times Kofi dunks on you guys. +/- 4.5.
Seriously, truly not trying to flame when I ask this: why do you think he came back?
Obviously the dude is a hell of a college player, but he must've gotten feedback saying he wouldn't get drafted or he likely goes pro. Why not go overseas? I'm just wondering what a "homer" opinion of him is....is it style? Speed? Footwork?

Not a huge NBA guy, but I think the game has just changed. Kofi would have been a top 5 pick back in the day, but most mock drafts didn’t have him in them, IIRC. Could only help his chances by returning to college as a preseason POY candidate on a team where he’ll be heavily featured. It’s easy to forget, but Kofi has only been playing basketball for a relatively small fraction of his life, too; another year of development could make a bigger difference for him than for most.

If you can't get excited with matchups against the following powerhouses, there is something wrong!

Alabama State
Chattanooga
University of Missouri-Kansas City
North Carolina Central
Northern Illinois
Southern

He can’t guard outside of the post, and he can’t score outside of the post. If he could do one of those well, he would get drafted. Plus he’s earning more at Illinois than his other options.

Every team has cupcakes early on their schedule. Quit whining.

It seems the days of multiple awesome games vs. Power 5 teams are almost history. :( We all simply have luck of the draw with the Big Ten/ACC Challenge and Gavitt, and then our standard rivalries (ISU for you guys, Mizzou in St. Louis for us) are luck of the draw with how good those teams are in a given year. I look back at the 2000-01 Illini non-conference schedule, and I wish I hadn’t been a little kid and had been able to appreciate some of these games:

- 4 cupcakes
- Maui: UNLV, Maryland, #1 Arizona
- at #1 Duke (Greensboro, Big Ten/ACC)
- at Kansas State
- vs. #7 Seton Hall
- vs. #7 Arizona (United Center in Chicago)
- vs. Missouri (St. Louis)
- at Texas

While doing this research, I saw that Iowa’s 01-02 schedule was also comparatively awesome to what we see now. Sucks for fans, but I think it’s just harder to schedule teams. :(

Even if you CAN schedule big time teams, it seems harder and harder to get them to your campus. If you’re Duke, you can come to Champaign and probably lose in front of 95% Illini fans and leave with egg on your face, or you can demand the game be at the United Center in front of 70% Illini fans instead, probably win and get free recruiting publicity in a big market. Sucks for fans who attend lots of home games.

The preseason tournaments are getting rarer with Covid issues. Hopefully they will return when it is safer.

In another era, Kofi probably would have been at least a first-round pic. He is hard to stop if he gets the ball right at the basket, but he is useless on offense outside of 5-6 feet--can't pass, dribble, or shoot. On defense, it isn't much different, although he is athletic enough to run the court. I think that is pretty much what he is, but the NBA doesn't have much use nowadays for guys who can't play more than 5 feet from the basket.

I like our 2nd year players to make a big impact and we have Jabo to calm everyone done

It won’t matter as the nation’s best shooter will be raining threes all game long.
