I always thought it was a tad disingenuous of Dan Lebatard to fail to notice the similarity in who was doing the shooting at spring break in Miami. Especially after the gun play made it into the Clevelander.

2022:

MIAMI BEACH, Fla. — After five people were shot over the weekend during spring break, the city of Miami Beach will declare a state of emergency and place the South Beach area under a midnight curfew beginning Thursday.

City Manager Alina Hudak announced the curfew Monday at a press conference with elected officials and senior police leaders, after the shootings in two separate incidents on Ocean Drive.

The curfew, which will encompass all of South Beach starting at 23rd Street, will take place just after midnight on Thursday and end Monday at 6 a.m. Because Hudak can only issue emergency orders over 72-hour periods, she said she will ask the City Commission to extend the curfew for the following weekend as well.

She also said a city-organized spring break concert scheduled for Saturday would be postponed in an abundance of caution.

2023:

Local business owner David Wallack has been in the middle of the action for more than three decades. His popular restaurant and night club, Mango’s Tropical Café, is in the heart of South Beach.

“Anyone who thinks that, ‘Oh, look at the money they’re making,’ that’s an absolute lie … It is not the case. The only ones who are stuck on the front lines are the businesses and our staff,” Wallack said.

Wallack, who said he did not want to take any chances, decided to close his restaurant early throughout the weekend. A chaotic scene unfolded on surveillance footage just outside.

“We had multiple human stampedes of hundreds of people rushing at you like a tsunami of people. Plates, glass flying. People running over each other. Thank God nobody was trampled. We’re all literally in mortal danger in that kind of a situation,” Wallack said.

Wallack believes that city officials should be doing more to help, such as putting up barricades.

So far this spring break season, Miami Beach police have arrested more than 320 people and confiscated more than 70 firearms, four of them from the deadly shooting scenes.

“Our residents are rarely involved in any of this in any way. We’re policing somebody else’s playground. Our cops have tried to figure out the best ways to clear tens of thousands of people off of streets, the best way to stop public brawling, the best way to stop riotous behavior. But that’s very hard to do,” Gelber said.

2024:

Citywide data show arrest numbers have still been substantial but are down from last year. From March 1 to March 17, Miami Beach police made 274 arrests, according to a report from the department. That’s an 8% reduction from the same time period last year and includes a 26% decrease in felony arrests, from 133 to 99. Misdemeanor arrests are up from 164 to 175. The numbers include all arrests in Miami Beach, not just those related to spring break.

“I am very pleased with the progress of the spring break deployment so far,” Police Chief Wayne Jones said in a statement. “The combined efforts of law enforcement and the community have contributed to establishing a safe and enjoyable environment for residents and visitors alike.”

There haven’t been any shootings, a measure Mayor Steven Meiner has said would be the marker of a successful month of March.
